Chapter Two: Discovery.

Thomas lays in his bottom bunk, the other Gladers all asleep peacefully. . . Except him. He stares blankly at the bottom of the top bunk. Unable to sleep because he was thinking.

His thoughts are relentless.

After lunch, they had escorted Katherine somewhere else. Thomas didn’t understand why, and he did put up quite a fight when they didn’t let him speak to her.

“Hey,” Katherine whispers and places a hand on Thomas’s chest gently. “It’s gonna be okay, okay?”

Thomas stared at her and sighs, then he glares at the scientist and guards behind her. “But—” He starts but Katherine cuts him off by placing her hand over his mouth.

“Do you trust me?” She whispers, Thomas looks at her in confusion.

She removes her hand and waits for his answer, “Of course I do, but—” She cuts him off once again by placing her hand over his mouth.

“I need you to trust me that it’s gonna be okay.” She says.

“But—”

“I’ll be fine!”

“But—”

“Nothing bad is gonna happen to me!”

“But—”

“Okay, that’s enough. What is up with you and all this butt business, Thomas?” She asks, exasperated while throwing her hands up. “Butts are for poopin’!

Thomas sighs and licks his lips nervously, then he smiles lightly at her comment and nods, “Okay, I trust it’ll be okay. . . I love you. . .”

Katherine smiles, “I love me, too. I’ll see you tomorrow! Bye!” She says and gave his lips and chaste kiss before she walked off with the scientists.

Thomas groans rather loudly, forgetting for a moment that there were people sleeping in,the same room as him, and rolls on his right side, his back facing the wall, and closes his eyes.

“Wait, Tom,” Diana stops Thomas while the guys walk off, they had stopped to leave Diana in a room so she didn’t have to sleep with the boys. “I know you’re worried about my sister, Tom.” She says softly.

Thomas stares at her for a brief moment, then he looks away.

“She’ll be fine,” She says and places a hand on his shoulder hesitantly, Thomas flinches back. Diana sighs and lets her arm drop to her side uselessly.

“Listen, if I know one thing about my sister, and I know a lot more than you do— trust me. . . Katherine can take care of herself, she doesn’t need someone worrying about her.” She narrows her eyes slightly before she walks towards her room.

“But I can’t trust you,” Thomas says. “Not after everything you put me and Katherine through.”

She stops and looks at him, “I get it, I was making stupid mistakes, and I really am sorry. If you trust Katherine and she trusts me, I can promise you, you can trust me too.”

“Night.” She mumble over her shoulder and enters the room. Thomas shifts his weight on each foot before catching up with the others.

Thomas blinks away the earlier conversation with Diana and rolls in the bed again until he’s lying on his left side, facing the wall.

He sighs softly and closes his eyes, “She’s. . . Safe. . . She’s okay. . . She’s alone. . .” Thomas whispers and sighs again.

“Tommy, calm down. . .We’re talking about Kat. . . She’ll be fine on her own.” Newt says suddenly and leans over the edge of the top bed with a small reassuring grin.
