Chapter One: PTSD.

Katherine continued to sit on a chair in the testing room. Or as she called it, the Lab Rat room. Thomas had been asked to follow a man a while ago and he still hadn't come back.

Newt stood off by the side as they checked his vitals-glancing at Katherine every once in a while-and Diana and Minho ran on the treadmills, chatting idly as the scientist continued to prod and inject Katherine.

The scientist attending Katherine, a woman with chocolate skin and bright eyes that introduced herself as Dr. Crawford, took out a needled much like the ones on. . . On the Grievers' metal legs.

Her mind went into panic mode.

Katherine thrashed in her chair with a loud scream and Newt's head snapped towards her. Newt was already starting to jump off his station and run to her.

Newt yanked off his wires, hopped off the chair and darted over to Katherine and the scientists.

Guards retrained him, Katherine went numb with fear when her next breath didn't come.

'I'm not breathing!'

Her muscles went taut, like a tight rope.

She couldn't catch a lungful of air automatically, like normal people do. . . Not in this situation.

She had to think about it.

She had to consciously inhale and willfully exhale because her body was no longer breathing on its own right now.

It was as if someone had jabbed a long needle through the wall of her chest and shot her lungs up with Novocain, paralyzing them.

Or the part of her brain that regulated involuntary breathing had been switched off.

She began obsessively picking at a finger nail until it bled.

'What if I pass out?'

She started breathing faster and faster. Soon she was sucking air like a vacuum cleaner.

Katherine became light-headed. The room spun. Brutal panic set in. She was wild-eyed. Maniac. Verging on a total freak-out.

"I-I need to help her! Or at least one of you bloody shanks help her!" Newt shouts as he watches the panicking Katherine.

Rat Man stared at him then lifted a hand, the guards let Newt through and he grabbed a brown paper bag sitting on a table, he emptied its contents on the metal.

Small plastic container with something blue. A green liquid in a vile. Some blood samples, probably Katherine's. Used syringes.

Newt placed the brown paper bag securely over her mouth and nose.

And she breathed.

Inhale.

Exhale.

The paper bag was supposed to relieve the wretched, god-awful symptoms, or at least, according to Newt.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Katherine's heart rate had to be clocking 120.

Inhale.

Exhale.

And then-

Katherine was so involved with her bag, breathing, and beating heart that she failed to notice the scientists whispering amongst themselves.
