Chapter Fifteen: Dark.

The music blared. The bass thumped and rattled the room. People danced and jumped all around them, the swords of light crisscrossed in the dark air.

The teens all around were slick and shiny with sweat, all the body heat made the room uncomfortably hot.

“Anything?” Diana shouted over the loud music to Newt and Katherine, they shake their heads and elbow their way towards Diana.

“No! What about you?” Newt shouted back at her.

“Nothing! How about we spread out?” Diana insisted, before Katherine could protest Diana and Newt were off.

She sighed and tried to slip past the many sweating, dancing bodies.

She groaned and began to take off her jacket before tying it around her waist. The heat was unbearable and it irritated her skin.

Katherine bumped past a few people on her right, shoved some others on her left, stumbled back from some people in front shoving her, and glared a dangerously cold look to those poor souls behind her.

They seemed to snap out of their drunken state for a moment because they did cower back and began to scurry far from her.

Katherine huffed and continued to walk around, she wiped away the beads of sweat forming on her forehead, she couldn’t think.

The heat of the room and the heat of being outside in the scorch for a few days began to get to her, plus the forming headache because of the movements and loud music was not helping.

“Water?” A kind voice asks, Katherine quickly looks over to see a blonde woman holding a red plastic cup towards her.

“Oh, s-sure. . . I could p-probably use a cup of. . .” Katherine choked on her words, the crowded room was making her feel claustrophobic and leaving her slightly breathless.

Thomas might be here, keep a sharp eye out, Katherine. Find Thomas first.

“Water.” The woman repeats and Katherine nods absentmindedly, she took the cup but didn’t even think twice.

She didn’t even know if this woman was telling he truth, it could’ve been—

Too late.

Katherine had already poured the liquid in her mouth, gulped the entire thing down in one gulp.

Immediately she regretted it. It burned like fire, searing her throat and chest as it went down; she broke into a lurching, wracking cough.

The woman giggled hysterically and Katherine growled and coughed and looked at the woman, she swung fist at fast and hard at her.

It connected with her nose and Katherine heard the bone crack, it filled her chest with a empty sick satisfaction.

The woman fell back, she clutched her broken nose and she howled in pain for a moment. Then her painful cries turned into hysterical cackles, she let her hands drop from her bloody face and stared at Katherine from her spot on the floor.

The woman stared and laughed and let the blood drip, Katherine clenched her teeth and ran.

She felt something funny in her gut. A soothing warmth, a calmness, growing and spreading through her body at a rapid pace.
