Chapter Six: Mall.
The Gladers continue to run until they made it outside, it was dark out and it was really windy.
“Come on! We’ll lose them in the storm!” Thomas yells over the howling wind.
Diana sticks with Katherine, their brown hair whipping wildly in the wind. They brush it back from their faces and squint their eyes to avoid getting sand in them.
They stumble side to side from the wind’s strong force, but manage to run in the lead towards a big glass building sticking out in the sand.
Without second doubt, Diana and Katherine run inside.
Diana! Katherine! Stay with the group! Don’t get separated!
I’m not going inside there!
Move it!
Hide!
“Everyone inside!” Katherine shouted at the hesitating Gladers.
She looks around, taking in her surroundings, or whatever she could see since it was dark. She looks over at Thomas who had just stumbled in and crashed into her.
Katherine grunts as her back hits the sand and Thomas lands on top of her, “M-My bad. . .” Thomas whispers.
Thomas then rolls off her and helps Katherine stand, he starts to brush sand off her hair and back
“T-Thomas, I’m fine—really, stop.” She says, every time his hands touched the patches of exposed skin—which is a lot since all she wore was a white tank top—she felt shocks shoot up from underneath her flesh.
But Thomas didn’t stop, Katherine arched her back slightly as his fingers trail up and down her back.
“Thomas—Thomas!” She says and stops him by grabbing his face with both her hands.
She stared at him with her piercing eyes, she caressed his cheek with her thumb, she was so close to Thomas now.
Thomas could barely think straight, all he had to do was lean a bit closer to close the gap between their lips.
But he couldn’t when he heard her question, “Okay. . . Thomas. . . What. Happened?” She asks gently.
His eyes avoided meeting her own, and avoided looking at her tempting pink lips. That made her frown but she just let go of his face and stepped back, putting some distance between the two.
“Thomas, what are we going to do now?” Newt asks, Thomas swallows and avoids meeting everyone’s gaze.
“I. . . I don’t know. . .”
“What?” Diana asks stepping closer to Thomas intimidatingly. Katherine clenches her jaw and steps in front of Thomas protectively, she narrows her eyes.
“Hey,” She says and crosses her arms over her chest. “Back off.”
Diana swallows and steps back, “I don’t know! I—I. . . I don’t. . . Really, really. . . Don’t. . .” Thomas sighs and looks around.
Newt just narrows his eyes at Thomas, “We followed you out into this, now you’re saying you have no idea where we’re going or what we’re doing?” Newt asks.
Katherine steps away from Thomas to stare at him, they all argue while Katherine looks around.
Katherine rolls her eyes and turns to her friends, “Shut up!” She shouts and everyone looks at her, she had enough of their childish bickering. “Look, we’re going to find a place, okay? We’re gonna be okay.”
Newt cocks his head to the side and stares at her, “How can you be so sure? Where are we gonna go, huh? Where?”
Then, before Katherine could reply Aris mentions something about people in the mountains, Katherine grins at him gratefully—in which Aris blushes and looks away—and looks at Newt.
“See? There, that’s where we’re going. To the mountains.” She says.
Thomas grabs a jacket and brushes some dust off before putting it on.
“Everyone search the area. Some of this stuff might be useful, take whatever you can. Spread out.” He looks at all of them, his gaze lingering on Katherine for few moments longer than necessary.
“If it’s safe, we’ll stay here for the night. Then we’ll gather our supplies and move out in the morning. But we all meet together here.” Thomas announces and everyone nods, Katherine grins ridiculously at him.
Her hand juts out in the air, and she waves her fingers slightly.
“I’ll stick with, Newtie. . .” She declares, there’s a brief flash of emotions on Thomas’s face.
Jealousy, hurt, suspicion. . . But Katherine shrugs it off though and follows Newt.
“Wait,” Thomas says and grabs her wrist, turning her around to face him.
“Thomas, I—” She didn’t get to finish because Thomas pressed his lips to hers instantly. And almost immediately Katherine kissed him back.
Thomas’s hands slip to her hips and pull her closer to him while Katherine’s arms snake around his neck.
After a few moments of their lips moving in perfect sync together, their lungs begin to beg for oxygen so they pull away
“There,” Thomas pants and kisses her lips once more before jogging off to catch up with Minho.
Katherine smirks slightly and jogs towards Newt who’s standing awkwardly by the side.
“Come on,” Katherine grabs Newt’s sleeve and tugs him deeper into the mall.
Katherine is mostly picking things up, looking at them, and putting them back down.
“Hey. . .” Newt says quietly, she looks at him. He tosses her a flashlight, and because of her amazing reflexes she catches it before it hits her face, “Be careful, Kat.”
Katherine smiles at him and clicks it on, “I’m always careful, Newtie.” She replies and starts walking away, until she finds some clothes.
She lifts them up and a cloud of dust surrounds her.
She coughs and sneezes as dust enter her nose and mouths, then she waves her hand around, and then bites her lip thoughtfully
She glances over and sees Newt crouched down with two backpacks, shoving some things inside with his back towards her.
She dusts off the clothes and slips off her baggy sweatpants, then she pulls on the black knee-ripped jeans.
She buttoned them and threw off her top and slipped the black shirt over her head, she shook off the green jacket and pulled it on.
Then, she proceeded to grab the flashlight and walked over to help Newt, she noticed his face was red and a silly smile played on his lips.
“What’s up?” She asks and helps him stuff the backpacks.
His looks at her with wide-eyes, and his cheeks flush a darker red, “U-Uh. . . Nothing. . . It w-was just. . . That. . .” He pointed to the poster of a half naked woman on a wall behind Katherine and she rolled her eyes.
“Gross,” She says and Newt chuckles and stuffed the bags.
He didn’t mean to look, he saw her shuffling around and he glanced over to see if she wanted any help with anything, that’s when he saw her strip off her clothing.
It was an accident and a unexpected surprise. . . But it was a rather pleasant surprise.
‘You have a very nice body, Katherine. . .’
Oh, leave him alone. He’s only a man!
