Chapter Fourteen: Fine.

Katherine sat with her friends around a fire they built a few hours ago, Jorge had excused himself and walked off somewhere to be alone.

Leaving the six teens alone.

Katherine stared at the fire, crackling and popping. Dancing and flickering around.

She looked at the stick in her hands and jabbed at the fire, pretending to stab someone.

She pushed around the ash and wood they found, when she pulled the stick away, she watched as the flames danced at the end of her stick.

She waved it around like a wand. Watching the black smoke rise from it.

Newt stared at her, his eyes studying the way her eyes reflected the dancing fire. She looked like she was in a trance.

The other four teens chatted quietly with one another. Sometimes Newt would join, but he mostly just examined Katherine carefully.

Then, when the other five fell asleep, leaving Newt and Katherine alone, Newt decided to talk to her.

Newt moved over to her and sat next to her, she glanced at him then back at the dying flames.

“I know it’s a stupid question but. . .” Newt trailed off quietly and stared at his hands. “You okay? You haven’t said a thing since. . . Well, since the building collapsed. . .”

Katherine was silent, then she brought her knees to her chest. She looked away from the fire but refused to look at Newt, so she stared at the distance.

“Fine. . .” She replied quietly and tugged her jacket closer—physically, yes, she was completely fine.

But mentally and emotionally. . . Not even close to stable.

Newt sighed and scooted closer, “I’m your best friend, Kat. . .”

Katherine looked at him finally and almost immediately she wrapped her arms around his waist, the tears she tried to keep at bay began to fall slowly.

“This feeling. . . Newt, this feeling in my chest. . . It’s consuming me. It feels like I can’t breathe. Like someone is just reaching in through the walls of my chest and squeezing my heart tightly.”

Newt could feel his heart bleed out for Katherine, seeing her like this. So vulnerable and soft. It killed him.

He wanted to help her. He wanted to be her knight in shining armor, but the problem was that she wasn’t going to let him.

He knew very well that the love and affection she felt for him was only brotherly. She loved him like a brother, like a friend.

Not a lover.

Not like Thomas.

She loved Thomas. No matter how much she didn’t want to believe it, she loved him. She had fallen fast and hard for the Greenie.

Newt sighs and hugs Katherine tighter, he caressed her back up and down gently, his chin resting on the top of her head.

“It’s fine, Katherine. Everything is gonna be okay. . .” Newt mumbled and fiddled with the ends of her hair.

Katherine looked up at him with teary eyes, then she grabbed the sides of his face and kissed him roughly.

Newt’s mind instantly became blank, everything he had just thought of were immediately thrown out the window.
