A few days in and Hana is no longer required to be the boys' guide, but Donghyun insists on sticking around because "You were the first friend I made here." He says, "Plus you're cute." He winks.
Hana scoffs, shoving him playfully, and continues to walk down the hall. "Don't play with my heart, Kim Donghyun."
The past few days have been quite hectic with Donghyun trailing behind Hana almost everywhere she goes. He asks her to take him to the best restaurant in town, the best park, the best movie theater, the best beach, the best everything. Of course, it's only been four days since they've been there and there was no way she could cover all of that in such a short amount of time, so Donghyun has resorted to creating a to-do list, showing it to her every time he hears someone mention a place while passing by in the hall.
No matter how much he whines about going out after school, Hana doesn't mind having him around so much. Donghyun is funny and charming, with lots of interests and willingness to do anything even if he wasn't planning to.
"Aw, c'mon, Hana." Donghyun pouts, running after Hana and throwing an arm around her shoulders. As they round the corner, Woojin falls into step beside Donghyun and sends a small greeting Hana's way. "Good morning, Hana." He says without much enthusiasm, which is something she's grown used to, but she was glad that he was making the effort to talk to her at least.
She softly smiles at him. "Morning, Woojin."
Hana has been cautious of how she acts around Woojin, and Donghyun took notice. "Don't worry about it. Woojin's just... a little stressed." Donghyun assures me. "He's a little sensitive to changes and he needs to readjust. So give him some time, yeah? He'll open up soon."
So she loosens up and lets Woojin be if he wished to be alone, but that doesn't stop her from initiating conversations when she feels the time is right. She hopes she can be a catalyst to his readjustment.
That day, after school, Hana agrees to show Donghyun and Woojin the best restaurant in town. The other new students, Youngmin and Daehwi, tag along.
"You're joking." Donghyun deadpans, looking up at the sign.
She shakes her head. "Opinions are subjective to each person and to me, this is truly the best place you could ever get food in town."
Donghyun groans, looking up at the golden arches that make the beautiful McDonald's sign, while Youngmin grins, hi-fiving her. "You've got great taste."
"I should have known." Donghyun whines, letting her and Daehwi drag him in by the arms.
"I'm so offended. You don't sound happy at all." Hana frowns, moving to stand in line.
"I was excited to try new food." Donghyun juts his lower lips out but it quickly changes to a grin. "But you know what, since you're here with me, I'm satisfied with that!" He pinches her cheeks, which she scowls at and takes revenge by reaching up to pinch his. He yelps, ducking behind Woojin and they continue to bicker with Woojin between them until Youngmin drags Donghyun to his side by his shirt and holds him still by placing an arm around his shoulder. Hana stands between Woojin and Youngmin, sticking her tongue out at Donghyun standing on Youngmin's other side.
Daehwi sighs. "Children."
As they eat, Hana looks up at the TV that's hooked up on the wall above Donghyun's head and reads the headlines. It was more news about Eunbi's disappearance. As more information is being found and released, the police are starting to doubt the possibility of it being a kidnapping and are beginning to believe it was intentional.
There was CCTV footage that captured her leaving town late at night, dressed in all black, and would return minutes before school started the next day, ready to go, in her school uniform. When her parents were interviewed, they confessed they had always thought Eunbi was sleeping by eleven, not sneaking out.
To Hana, it seemed odd. Eunbi wasn't the kind of girl to be going out late at night. She was somewhat fragile; she cried easily, but was stubborn and would never back down even with tears streaming down her face. She listened well and did what was expected of her. If you looked at it as an outsider in Eunbi's life, there didn't seem like there would ever be a reason for her to run off like this.
But Hana acknowledges that everyone has their own secrets that no one else knows. There must have been something else that compelled Eunbi to act as she did. Whether it was a kidnapping case, or whether it was the case of a runaway teen, there's something that everyone is missing, but no one knew what.
