Weeks pass and before Hana knows it, her teacher announces it was time to select their class' representatives. Each class was to have two representatives, one boy and one girl, who would then be part of the school's student council.
Hana was one last year, and because she enjoyed it, she decided to volunteer again. Unsurprisingly, there's no other girl who decides to volunteer because it's their senior year. No one wanted to take on more responsibility than they had to during their last year of high school, and it makes sense. But Hana decided why not? If it was fun last year, it'd be fun again this year. There were small sacrifices to make for this position, so she raises her hand.
"Thank you, Hana." Mr. Kim smiles, motioning for her to come stand in the front. "And for the boys. Would anyone like to volunteer?" He asks, looking up after writing Hana's name down.
It's silent for a while, and some of the girls start giggling to fill the awkward silence.
"Don't by shy now. Hana's had experience, and I'm sure she'd be more than willing to help you along the way."
She beams, nodding her head enthusiastically. "Of course, I'd be willing to. It's nothing too bad."
Again, it's silent. Mr. Kim sighs, "Volunteers or victims, boys."
As Hana's eyes sweep through the classroom, she spots a hand go up. Her eyes widen in surprise.
"I'd like to give it a try, Mr. Kim." He says quietly.
Hana's teacher raises his eyebrows. "Park Woojin, interesting to see a new student take charge when some of you have been here your whole lives." Mr. Kim then eyes each of the boys to tease the students as they burst into laughter. "Thank you for volunteering. Come on up here."
Woojin makes his way through the aisles and moves to stand next to Hana. She flashes him a smile, whispering, "Hey, Woojin."
He nods, "Hello, Hana."
"Well, thank you, Hana and Woojin, for making this a lot easier than it should be." Mr. Kim pats them on the shoulders, then turns to the class. "Alright, kids, here are your class representatives for the duration of the school year. Please thank them for volunteering now and for all the time that they will be dedicating to our class."
"Thank you!" The whole class says in a chorus.
"Thank you." Hana and Woojin say in return, bowing to the class. When she looks up, she makes eye contact with Donghyun. He flashes two thumbs up, making her smile again.
After class is over, Mr. Kim calls her and Woojin to his desk.
"Okay, kiddos. Here is the packet with details entailing the senior class trip. You have about a month and a half to contribute any ideas you wish and contact our class' parents. The first student council meeting is tomorrow after school. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know." He says, handing a folder to each of them. "Any questions right now?"
Hana looks at Woojin. He shakes his head.
"Not any I can think of right now." She answers.
"Great!" Mr. Kim claps his hands and smiles. "Remember to exchange contact information right away so you two can figure out what plan works out best for you two."
"Got it. Thank you, Mr. Kim."
Afterwards, Hana walks down the hall with Woojin beside her. "I don't know about you, but I want to get started on planning as soon as possible so we have more time." She says, fanning the folder in her hands.
"Me too," Woojin says, holding his up. "I'll meet you in front of the school after P.E., then?"
She nods, "Sounds good to me."
"Cool, see you in a bit." He replies, then turns to head further down the athletic hall to the boys' locker room.
Hana stands outside the girls' locker room for a few moments, hoping that after today, maybe Woojin will open up a little. She felt bad seeing him trail behind them when they all went out as a group, preferring to stay quiet and keep to himself. He seems to be stoic, keeping his own feelings to himself and not once complain about anything. But Hana knows there's more to Woojin than just that, there had to be. After all, like Youngmin said a few days ago, it was only the tip of the iceberg that she was seeing.
