Once school lets out, Hana exits the girls' locker room with one of her friends, Hayoon. She's talking about a guy she recently met, and how he ended up cracking the most embarrassing pick-up lines ever. Hana laughs so hard her stomach starts to hurt. Some of those lines were completely ridiculous.
"This isn't probably the best icebreaker but Titanic." Hayoon imitates his voice, pulling her chin in with a straight face.
Hana snorts, "You're joking! He actually said that?"
"I swear, Hana! I only laughed because I felt bad." Hayoon giggles, laying her head on Hana's shoulder as they head toward the main entrance, smiling dreamily. "Ugh, he was so cute though and he was really fun to talk to after those horrid lines."
Hana shrugs the shoulder Hayoon is leaning against. "Ask him out again, then. What's wrong with asking for another date?"
Hayoon hums in acknowledgement, "You're right, I definitely should."
As they leave the building, Hana spots Woojin leaning against the wall, scanning the crowd of students. She nudges Hayoon, "I gotta go, Woojin's waiting for me."
Hayoon slyly smiles. "Oh? What for?" She wiggles her brows.
"Oh my God, Hayoon, it's not what you think. We're meeting up to discuss the class trip. Now go find your boyfriend and ask him on a date." Hana shoves her playfully. Hayoon pouts, "You two just got the stuff today and you're starting already?" She sighs, "That's the Hana I know, I suppose." She grins, walking backwards while waving. "I'll see you tomorrow then!"
"Bye, Hayoon!" Hana waves with both hands until Hayoon is too far to see her. Turning around, Hana stands on her toes to look for Woojin. He's still standing where he was before, eyes still searching the crowd. "Woojin!" Hana calls waving her hand in the air so he could spot her. He looks in her direction and she smiles, running over to him.
"Sorry, I took longer than I thought." She sheepishly laughs.
Woojin pushes himself off the wall and begins to walk. "It's okay. I don't have anything else to do anyway."
"Where are you going?" She asks, jogging to catch up with him.
He stops walking abruptly, and her face almost collides with his shoulder. She stops and looks up at him questioningly.
"I'll walk you home. We can talk about what to do and how we can get things done. If we have any questions, we'll take note of them and ask Mr. Kim tomorrow. There isn't much that we can do now until we brainstorm places to go." Woojin says, then looks at her. "Where to?"
They fall into silence as they walk. Hana feels awkward, but she didn't feel suffocated by tripping over what to say. It seems like Woojin is waiting for her to speak first, and she isn't sure what to start with. She swings her backpack to her front and unzips it, pulling out the folder Mr. Kim had given them earlier. Woojin looks over curiously as she flips through it, then she points at the second page.
"How about we start with what the class wants to do while we're there? That way when we call the parents, we can tell them what we're planning on and once we send out the permission slips, they'll already be informed and won't have as many questions as they might have." She suggests, showing him the list of attractions by the hotel they would be staying in.
Woojin nods, "That sounds good. If we copy and paste this into a document, we could probably create a short survey so we can get an idea of what the students want to do. Have them pick their top five places they want to go and compile it all so we can get a variety of plans."
Hana stares at him with her mouth open in awe. Woojin awkwardly looks around, "Is something wrong?"
She shakes her head, "No! It's just-" She laughs, "-this is the most you've ever talked to me before. I thought you hated me and refused to talk to me."
Woojin looks shocked, eyes wide and eyebrows up. He runs a hand through his hair in embarrassment. "I'm sorry I came off that way, I don't mean to." He says, then quickly adds, "I don't hate you either. I was just uh, how do I say this without sounding weird? I was analyzing you. I don't think I've ever met anyone like you before. It's not in a bad way. You're interesting." Woojin clarifies.
Hana blushes. She knows he isn't flirting, but she's still taken by surprise. It didn't seem like something he would say, especially based off her first impressions. "Ah, is that so?" She coughs. "Thank you, I suppose? I'm not sure how to respond to that."
Woojin rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment. "No need to. I was just explaining myself. I hope that clears any misunderstandings."
"All of them, really." She closes the folder and pushes it back into her backpack. She points left. "We turn here."
As they wait for the light, she speaks up. "Right, um, about the survey. We should definitely get student input. We can bring it up at the student council meeting tomorrow and see what they think. The survey won't take long, so the teachers will probably agree to let them do it first thing during homeroom."
Woojin takes out his phone, tapping on the screen a few times, types in some words, scrolls down, and shows it to me. "There are quite a few attractions by the hotel. I can compile the list tonight and-"
"How about we do it right now?" Hana suggests. Woojin looks up from his phone. "What?"
She points at the park across the street. "We can sit there and figure out which places are most affordable and whether we need the buses or not. I mean, if you're not busy that is. I don't want you to do it all alone." Hana finds herself blushing again because she was rambling.
Woojin shrugs, "Sure, I don't see a reason not to. It'll get done faster this way."
For a good hour or so, Hana and Woojin sit on the top landing of the playground because a few elementary students had come and kicked them off the swings for hogging them. They scroll through their phones, searching for places that their classmates may take interest in and compile a list on a shared document, ruling out the ones that may be too expensive or too far.
After narrowing it down from thirty-four to fourteen options for the survey, Hana slouches against the giant tic-tac-toe board behind her, letting out a sigh of relief. "That took longer than I thought." She sighs.
"I'll print a few copies to show at the meeting tomorrow." He says, yawning while stretching his arms above his head. He then offers a hand to Hana. "C'mon, I'll walk you the rest of the way home."
Hana gives him a small smile while taking his hand, letting him help pull herself up. "Thanks, Woojin."
