Chapter 5-
You can take a girl out of Pittsburgh but you can't take the Pittsburgh out of a girl
Mackenzie had experienced her first week as the new girl in school. Thankfully the label of the new girl was short lived thanks to her now new 'bffs' Casey, Jasmin and Taylor. They were not the kind of girls Mackenzie ever saw herself becoming friends with but there was something about how she felt when she was around them. She felt important. Like she mattered, she felt popular and pretty, a little like Maddie. The way the girls glared at her enviously as she strutted down the hall, how the guys lusted after her, it reminded her of how people would treat Maddie. And she loved it. The trio were bitchy, they noticed flaws in everyone. Flaws Mackenzie never noticed before, but once you start you can't stop. Even after a long summer spent in Cali she was finally morphing into a typical Cali girl. The glitz, the glam, she felt like a stereotypical it girl. She had already received multiple offers from different guys for dates but she didn't want them. She only wanted Carter, too bad she couldn't have him.
"I've been meaning to ask you guys, who's Carter? And why is Case so protective of him?" Mackenzie asked Jasmin and Taylor whilst admiring her newly painted nails. She was sitting in Jasmin's room, they were having a pamper day and Casey was away to the bathroom. "Carters her boyfriend, duh!" Taylor giggled looking to Jasmin for approval. Jasmin rolled her eyes and shook her head. Mackenzie had noticed the group was ordered into a strict list of power. Casey was of course on top, followed by Jasmin who clearly longed for the spot of Queen Bee and lastly Taylor who Mackenzie figured got lucky when she landed a spot in the popular group. "He isn't just her boyfriend," Jasmin explained. Mackenzie was a little disappointed that the pair were official but she was far from surprised, it was your typical it girl/ it guy power couple. "Carter and Casey grew up together, their moms met in college, they used to be best friends before they dated but now they constantly argue. Casey is scared he is going to break up," Jasmin said nodding her head with wide eyes. Someone cleared their throat at the door, "Jasmin!" Casey squealed. "That is my information to tell not yours," Casey stated while Jasmin cowered away. "I'm sorry Casey, I swear Mackenzie asked and I felt pressured," Jasmin said picking up the speed as she went along. Mackenzie could almost see the sweat on her brow. "Don't pin the blame on someone else, Jas" Casey spat. Everyone sat in silence as Casey pranced over to the dressing table carefully eyeing up the nail polish selection. She swiftly picked up a deep blood red. "And anyway every couples have arguments. Me and Carter are together and there's no way to break us up," she looked straight into Mackenzies big brown eyes venomously. She turned her back sharply still watching Mackenzie in the mirror, "so Kenz fancy painting my nails?" She smirked a huge smile painted on her face. But Mackenzie could see right through it. She knew if she didn't stay away from Carter, Casey would be out for blood. Mackenzie's blood, the very colour of her nail polish.
Mackenzie admired the pretty sunset as she walked home on a cool California night. Casey had been fine with her for the rest of the night, she just couldn't work her out. There was something about her that reminded her of her old teacher back in Pittsburgh. She guessed it was just their antics and the fact that they were the biggest manipulators she had ever met. Even Abby was less sneaky that Casey though and Mackenzie felt herself missing Pittsburgh. She hated to admit it but Pittsburgh was a part of her, it held a part Mackenzie could never get back, Maddie. She wished she was with her, she would have thrived in California, she was a star. But Mackenzie, Mackenzie was plain average. That's what everyone told her except Maddie. She was the only one who comforted her and she wished more than anything she could ask her for advice about Carter. She would know what to do but she wasn't there.
