I grip the bed sheets and don't let go. Especially when Casey tries to take my blood pressure. I held on to the sheets. I hold on for Caleb, who cannot hold on. Who cannot not talk, or move.
It was not until Dr. Nexus came in to take me to the operating room, that I let go. I let go only to hug my mother, who promised she would be waiting for me when I got out of surgery.
"Are you nervous for the procedure?" Casey asked me. She is one of the ones taking my bed to the operating room.
"Yes, just a bit," I add, glancing around me nervously. I look at all the other patients. Some are old, some are young. There is a girl my age, she smiles at me and gives a small wave. I hope no one recognizes me with my ratty hair and my baggy eyes.
"This is it!" Casey says, pulling open a door leading into the surgical wing.
"Yay," I say sarcastically, Casey seems to understand and gives me a small chuckle.
We go down a few doors and stop at Operating Room 3. A nurse helps Casey open the door and push my bed inside. Inside the room is what I had always imagined an operating room to look like. There was a bunch of machines and monitors. They put me under a bright light and a nurse pulls my hair together and puts it in a hairnet, to keep it out of the way.
"Okay, I am going to put the mask over your face. I want you to start counting up from one. At about 100 or so, you should begin feeling sleepy. No matter what, try to keep counting. That's how we will know you are asleep," Dr. Nexus says, placing a mask over my nose. I begin to breathe normally as the Dr. told me I should. I started counting slowly and by the time I got to 80, I started feeling drowsy.
"91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105," I kept going, and my eyes started to close.
"115, 116, 117, 118-" And that's when I went to sleep. As I closed my eyes, I hear the nurses and Dr. Nexus moving around the room. And the heart monitor is going: Beep, Beep, Beep
