Chapter Five -- Slipin'
I hung up the phone and got up to check on Kaila in the next room. I had to fight the urge not to pick her little body up and put her in the bed with me and Kai every single night. In my eyes there's no way you can ever be over protective of your child.
I'll die without my baby girl.
Even her little snores were cute. I reached down to her full sized bed and pulled her favorite Barbie blanket up to cover her chest before kissing her on the forehead for the second time tonight. I turned her night light off and went back into my room.
After about thirty minutes later, I heard Kai stumble into the house.
"God, I hope he isn't drunk," I prayed in a whisper with my eyes closed. I turned over to my side, so I could at least look asleep when he came in. I really don't want to deal with his foolish drunken acts right now.
I heard him walking up the stairs slowly and heavily. It sounded like it was a struggle for him to make it up here.
Yep, he's definitely drunk.
"Baby?" I heard him call weakly once he made it to the room.
"Baby," he coughed, "Wake up...please."
I rolled my eyes before turning over to face him.
When I did, I sat up straight and gasped.
Kai's left eye was swollen shut, his lip was busted, his face marked with purple spots in different places, and his clothes was torn and hung loosely on his beaten body.
I jumped up from underneath the covers on the bed before running to my man's aid.
I grabbed him in my arms while he took me in his. We stood in the middle of our room holding each other while I held back tears. I can't stand to see him like this, but I know I have to be strong. More stronger for him or me, I don't know.
"What happened?" I asked gently with my head resting on his shoulder. He shook his head. "Kai... tell me. Please," I begged, wanting to know.
I lead him over to the bed so he could lie down. He let out a deep breath and a few grunts before looking me in my eyes while he rested his head on my lap. I put my hands in his, waiting patiently for him to talk.
"When I got off the phone with you, I went straight to my car to leave the club. I was almost at the car when some nigga snatched me in the alley, catching me completely off guard.
"It was four or five of them. I didn't bring my gun in the club so there was nothing I could do. The funny thing is, when they got done kicking my ass, one of 'em said, 'keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.' So shit, I'm coming up with the conclusion that somebody in the clique set me up." He looked away from my eyes and starred at the headboard behind me. "I put all of them niggas on, and they betray me."
Don't ever bite the hand that feeds you, ran through my head like a flash tornado warning on TV, but I didn't say a word 'cause I knew it would happen soon, but I didn't think this soon.
I wanted to slap him for not keeping his gun on him at all times like he know he should, but I still kept my mouth closed and my hand still as I leaned down and kissed him gently so I wouldn't hurt him.
"You can't trust anyone, Kai. You know that," I finally whispered while rubbing his head. I know it always calms him.
I leaned my back against the headboard while I watched as his body go from tense to limp in a just matter of seconds.
"I love you, Diamond," he said in his sleepy voice that I loved so much.
"I love you too, Kai."
