Chapter 28

Damon's POV

I sat in the corner of the room. I could recall all the pain and torture from before. I looked over to Elena. She was standing up in her cell. She looked worried.
"Damon, how did you survive all those years?" She asked after about a minute.
"Enzo's friendship kept me alive, He gave me a reason to hang on to my humanity..." I began as I saw it all happen before me.

Unknown cell

I was huddled up in the corner of the room. Pain surged through me. I looked over to Enzo. He was standing up in his cell.
"You much of a sports fan, Damon?" He asked. But when I tried to reply it hurt. Pain surged through me as I tried to move and tell him. But I couldn't get out the words.
"No. Neither am I. Any other interests...fine wines, travels, cars?" He said as he looked at me and could see I was still in a lot of pain.
" I'm partial to Jaguars myself, convertibles, the kind you take on a Sunday drive to impress a pretty girl. Ever done that?" He asked again. This time I was able to say a few words. It still hurt but it was bearable.
"Once or twice." I grunted.
"Oh, come now. Got to be more than that."
"Well, the girl I was trying to impress was more of a horse and carriage type girl." I said gritting my teeth as I tried to hide the pain.
"What, just one girl?" He asked.
"Never met another one like her." The words were getting easier and easier to say as I kept speaking.
Enzo: Well, fair enough.
"What about you? Any pretty girls?" I ask.
"Eh, too many to count," he began before pausing and looks down before saying. " Actually, there was one. Her name was Maggie" I see him smile.
"Where'd you meet her?" I asked him.
"Here of all places. She was working for Dr. Whitmore." He said.
"Charming?" I asked.
"Oh, she was. Very. She was kind to me. She used to sit here in the hallway taking notes while she observed me." He said smiling to himself
"That's how you fell for her?" I asked him surprised.
"Oh, she was also stunningly beautiful." He added.
"Ah." I replied trying not to laugh as it hurt.
"You have to understand she...she wasn't part of the torture and the experiments. For the longest while, she didn't realize that Dr. Whitmore was doing more than just observing my behavior. I didn't have the heart to tell her. I was just so glad of her company, you know?" He said. I looked at him and I completely understood what he meant.
"Yeah." I said sympathetically.
"When she finally realized what was going on here, she couldn't bear it. So she said she was sorry, and she left." He replied. He had a brief moment of sadness before turning back to his normal facial expression.
"Well, you know, it never really would have worked anyway. You're a vampire, she's a human. The relationship would have been doomed from the beginning." I told him.
"You need a more positive outlook, mate." He said. I smiled at him, before hearing the door open door open. Then I saw Dr. Whitmore walk towards are cells
holding his keys. He stopped and then looked at us.
" Who's next?" He asked with that devious smile. We both looked at him with rage, but said nothing to him. Then he turns his head I me and said.
"21051, you seem to have more energy." He then walked over to the front of my cell, and was about to unlock it, when Enzo shouted.
"I take that as an insult!" Then he grabbed the bars of his cell and rattled them angrily, briefly.
"I have far more energy than my neighbor here." He said again. What was he doing? Was he really going to take my place?
Dr Whitmore pauses before walking over to Enzo cell.
"I can't believe you didn't notice." He said.
"Your turn then." Dr. Whitmore said before unlocking the cell, he then grabbed Enzo firmly, and carried him out of the cell . I sit there shocked before hitting the bars once in anger and pacing in my cell. I could hear Enzo's screams of pain. Why was he such an idiot! I guess he helped me but still!

Some time later, Dr. Whitmore returns and threw Enzo in his cell without a word or a glance. He was about to leave when I shouted.
"Why are you doing this to us?!" I was really mad. No I was furious. Then Dr Whitmore turned around and walked towards me.
"Because, 21051, I'm seeking out the smallest indivisible unit of your biological makeup, and once I can understand you from a cellular level, I can put you to use." He said before walking away and leaving me angry and frustrated.
