Chapter 30
Robyn took a long shower, reveling in the warm water and, admittedly, taking a few minutes to cry. Jason's talk didn't help very much in the emotional trauma. Robyn still felt guilty and she still felt sick. But when she finally climbed out of the tub and dried herself off, she threw away her nasty underwear and wrapped a towel around herself. Robyn glanced into the mirror. Bags hung under her eyes and her cheeks were hollowed. It almost seemed as if she was on the street again. She wasn't going to lie, she was more than a little self conscous about it. She dug around in the closet and found a long, fluffy gray robe. So Robyn put it on -- it fell just below her calves and fell past her fingertips -- and finished toweling off her hair.
When Robyn walked out, she spotted Jason laying on the bed, feet dangling off. By the looks of it, he also showered and changed into sweatpants and a hoodie. Jason looked her way.
"Let's go up and see what might fit you," He said, popping up and beckoning Robyn to follow him. She did, and he lead her through the cave and up to a large staircase.
"Steph or Cass might let you borrow some clothes for now," he said, turning and walking backwards up the stairs. His foot slipped on a stair and he stumbled, making Robyn sputter and laugh.
"Careful!" She scolded jokingly. They went through what must have been a hidden door, because they popped out into the middle of a dimly lit hallway. A warm rug under her feet was a stark, but pleasant, contrast from the cold stone floor of the cave. Then Jason took her down many other halls and up a few more staircases and stopped in front of a door. He knocked lightly. The door opened and Cass stood before them.
"Robyn, here, needs to borrow some clothes. That okay?" Cass nodded and stepped aside to let Robyn in. But before Jason could waltz in, she shut the door. There was a light thud of him colliding with the dark wood.
"What do you need?" Cass walked to a dresser. Her Asian accent was thick and her voice was light and quiet. Classical music played from somewhere in the room.
"I need, uh, everything," Robyn said the last word slow and drawn-out to emphasize her point. Cass studied Robyn's face for any sign of a joke and opened a few drawers.
"You can pick. I have lots of sizes. Girls come here a lot and leave clothes sometimes." Robyn began to dig round in the bra drawer, opting for a black sports bra, as Cass spoke. "I get a lot of different sizes whenever I go shopping with Harper and Stephanie." Then Robyn found a pair of gray panties that seemed to be her size. Cass closed the drawers and walked over and opened the closet, which was massive, and let Robyn loose. There was a row of sweatshirts and hoodies that called for her (she picked a big, worn college hoodie). She also chose a pair of black track pants.
Cass gave her privacy to change and threw the unused robe into a laundry basket.
"Thanks, Cass," Robyn said. Cass smiled and let Robyn out of her room. Jason was leaning on the wall.
"Okay. You hungry?" He asked. Robyn nodded and they were off to the kitchen.
"Y'know, you might as well live here." Jason said as Robyn was devouring a bowl of cereal. She asked why the cereal, and Jason replied with a simple, "it's the only thing Alfred trusts us to make by ourselves."
"I heard about what happened to your appartment. At this rate, your rent is gonna be way, way overdue, your landlord is gonna freak, and you'll never get done fixing the damn place."
"I know, but," Robyn swallowed a mouthful of food, "I don't want the landlord to sue, so I want to finish the place first. Plus I have a neighbor that is probably beyond worried sick about me." She said. She felt another pang of guilt for Cooper.
Robyn finished and Jason put the bowl and spoon into the dishwasher. Jason picked up on Robyn's look.
"Just because Alfred is our butler doesn't mean he likes doing the dishes." He said. Robyn grinned. "Hey, you feeling better?" Jason asked.
Robyn shrugged, "I guess...."
"You feel good enough to talk to Tim?" Jason's face was vacant of any humor. If anything, it showed mild concern. His eyebrows were bunched together, a frown playing on his lips.
"Does he want to even look at me? After what I've done? What he's seen? If it was me-"
"Look, kid, beating yourself up for something you had no control over is a bad idea. You're never gonna heal if you keep opening that wound, okay? Just... tell yourself to take it easy. So far, you're doing great." Jason interrupted with a pat on Robyn's back, "I already forgave you. The next step is forgiving yourself. And I'm not gonna lie -- that's gonna take some time."
Robyn pulled Jason into a hug. He tensed up at first, then slowly relaxed into it. "I'm glad you're my friend," Robyn said with a small smile and broke the hug.
"Great. Okay. Let's take you up to Tim," Jason said, leading her out of the kitchen and back through the maze of a manor. Last time Robyn saw Tim, he seemed pretty disappointed. Robyn felt her hands grow clammy as she followed Jason to Tim's bedroom door.
"What do I say?" Robyn whispered to Jason.
"Just, start small. If he's mad, he won't stay mad long, especially if it's you." Jason paused a beat, "Try something along the lines of 'Hey, I missed you.' He'll come along. Don't worry." Jason patted her shoulder.
Robyn took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
"Tim? Can we talk?"
