Chapter 31- Final!
I didn’t know what to expect walking into the school dance that evening.
Valentine’s Day was a big deal at my school, and even more of a big deal that it landed on Friday so they could have a huge dance on a weekend night. Guaranteed multiple high school couples were going to become teenage pregnancy stories exactly 9 months from now. I wasn’t going to act like I was above the whole Valentine’s Day thing, or above going to this dance. I had always wanted to go with someone, but I was never asked to be anyone’s valentine growing up. So I just feel neutral to the whole thing.
I hope tonight gave me a reason to like Valentine’s Day, but I have a feeling it’s just going to end up with me being bitter towards the hallmark holiday.
So here I was, about to enter the gymnasium, wearing a soft pink sundress. It was far from what my usual wardrobe was, it was loose and flouncy. My hair was curled into light waves and I was wearing light make up. I wanted to show Thomas another side of me, a softer side. I was turning over a new leaf, and I want to show Thomas that.
A girl walked around me and entered the gym, where a top 40 song was being played obnoxiously loud. I cringed slightly and followed her in before the doors closed. I looked around and recognized almost everyone, only people in older grades showed up to the dance. Anyone who was a sophomore or younger, you were immediately unwelcomed to almost every school event in the school, so that left the two older grades and a handful of seniors in the gym.
I scanned the room and spotted Thomas in the corner of the gym, talking to what I recognized to be Jack, a senior that I was offered $20 to manipulate, but declined because I knew he was a nice guy.
I spotted Tati and Joey dancing together but decided it was against my right to interrupt them. So I just stood against the wall, swaying my hips slightly. I decided to take a drink before coming because I wasn’t feeling all too confident. Liquid courage seemed to be very important to me as of late.
“You showed!” Tati beamed as soon as she noticed me. Joey smiled as well, as if he knew something the both of us didn’t.
“Yeah, but I don’t see the point,” I shrugged. I looked over to Thomas talking to a group of guys. It seemed as if he just said something funny because they all burst into a fit of laughter. I immediately felt self-conscious, I crossed my arms over my stomach.
“You look amazing,” Tati said, spinning me around. “Doesn’t she Joey?”
“Yeah,” Joey nodded. “Thomas is a lucky guy.”
“Not really,” I shook my head. “I don’t even know why I came.”
“But you came,” Tati grabbed one of my hands and squeezed it. “That’s what matters.”
I didn’t bother to respond as they played a popular Panic! At the Disco song. I listened along and started dancing with Tati, Joey left to go talk to Thomas. I tried not to pay attention as Joey pointed towards me and Thomas nodded.
I didn’t know what to expect, would he come up and ask me too dance? Would he want me to walk up to him and ask him to dance?
It looks like he didn’t want either because he just left the Gym. Joey walked back to us and he was smiling again. I didn’t understand why, Thomas just left the gym. That was it. Game over.
The music stopped suddenly and the lights flickered a bit, as if to get everyone’s attention. My gaze rested upon the front stage, where they crown the Prom Queen. I wondered why they were using the stage for the Valentine’s Day dance. But I didn’t really know how these things worked, seeing’s that I’d never been to this dance. I didn’t think there was a queen, so what was up?
