Okay, today, this Friday, I am going to show Thomas I am ready for whatever he had planned for our relationship. Whether it be love or friendship, I wanted to be in his life, drama free.

But how would I know? Would he even pick up on my signs? This was all so confusing… I just needed to calm down and grab a hold of the situation. It was obvious he liked me more than just friends, but he needed to define whatever this was. Because there was no way I could do it myself.

Wow, so much for grabbing a hold of the situation.

“Thanks for the ride dad,” I said mindlessly as I exited the car. We hadn’t talked since the night before and we didn’t dare touch the subject that made me have a mental breakdown. We both just needed our space and we were both happy to give it to each other.

I walked down the school courtyard, feeling gazing eyes on me. I was used to it by now, but really I wondered why I was getting more attention than usual.

“Thomas is looking for you,” this random girl I had grade 9 gym with told me.

“Thanks,” I replied confidently. I walked into the girl’s bathroom in confusion.

Why is Thomas looking for me? I wondered as I applied my eyeliner. He could just be asking about homework or whatever, I didn’t really have any idea. I got changed into a tight black long sleeve and matching pants. I let my hair out of my pony tail and let it fall into loose curls around me. I slung my bag over my shoulder and left the bathroom in a hurry.

Where was he? Where would I find him?

I didn’t know his first 3 classes, and for that I felt like he didn’t tell me anything about his normal life. I just knew the stuff underneath it all, which I found unique about our relationship, whatever it was.

I walked into homeroom, because I didn’t want to seem desperate by looking around for him. I decided he would find me at lunch if he really wanted to know where I was.

I was foolish to think he would wait until lunch to find me, he showed up to my science class.

It had been in the middle of learning about cell division when we were ever so rudely interrupted.

“Hello, the principal would like to see Scarlett,” Thomas told the teacher with confidence. I even believed him for a brief moment.

“May I ask why?” My teacher asked.

“I don’t know they wouldn’t say, but it’s an emergency,” he said, shrugging. “It could be really serious.”

My teacher hesitated, “Alright.”

“Thank you Sir,” I said as I collected my things. As I waited by his desk for my hall pass, I had allowed myself to look at Clarissa for the first time today. It looked as if she’d been crying the night before. Slowly the pieces were coming together in my mind, but still weren’t creating a clear image.

“Wow, for a second I thought he wouldn’t believe me,” Thomas laughed casually as we hid just out of view from the science class windows.

“What is this about?” I asked. “People said you were looking for me this morning.”

“I was,” Thomas said. “I was going to text you but I thought I would tell you in person.”

“That important eh?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Let’s go get something to drink now that you are out of school,” Thomas smiled at me slyly.

“What if they call my house…?” I looked back to my science class.

“Pretty sure you ditching a day of school is the least of your family’s problems.” Thomas said insensitively, I pretended that it didn’t bother me. He offered me his hand.

“This better be good,” I said finally, taking his hand in mine.

“Okay, you got your milkshake,” I said as we sat in the McDonald’s parking lot. “What’s up?”

“I told Clarissa I didn’t want to be with her,” he replied.

“I’ll call the press,” I said, pulling my phone out of my pocket.

“Don’t be ironic,” Thomas said, pressing his head against the back of the car seat.

“Why did you call it off then?” I asked.

“Because you were right, I don’t want to be leading on all these girls.”

“Aw, Tin Man, you do have a heart.” I replied sarcastically, I couldn’t stand the fact that he wanted me to be proud of him for acting like a decent human being.

“Something’s wrong,” Thomas said, looking at me as he took a sip of his shake.

“Nothing’s wrong,” I shook my head.

“Yes,” he shifted his body around so he faced me, “there is.”

“My mom came home during school yesterday,” I said, looking over his shoulder. I paid special attention to a piece of garbage flying around in the empty parking lot.

“Scarlett,” he urged me, my eyes met his. “it’s okay.”

“It isn’t okay,” I said, shaking my head. “She wants a divorce from my dad.”

“Oh Scarlett…” Thomas placed his drink in its holder and placed his hand on my back.

“She grabbed some things so she could stay with the guy she cheated on my dad with…” I blinked fast to stop the tears in my eyes from spilling.

“Come here,” he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me onto his lap. I gracefully banged my knee against the steering wheel before settling into his body.

“I don’t want to think about it,” I told him, shaking my head.

“You don’t have to,” he said.

“She’s a bitch,” I said angrily.

“She’s still your mom,” Thomas said, “I mean what she did is despicable, but she’s still your mom.”

“I’m sorry,”

“Don’t be,” Thomas kissed my cheek. “But there is a real reason why I asked you here.”

“And what would that be?” I asked.

“The moment isn’t right,” he said, shaking his head.

“Thomas,” I replied, I could feel my heart in my throat.

“Tonight,” Thomas said, nuzzling his face into my neck. “There’s a party.”

“I heard about it,” I nodded.

“Will you give me the imponderable joy of taking you?” Thomas asked, expecting me to blow up.

“Sure,” I replied, smiling.

“Wait- what?” Thomas squeezed me.

“Sure, I’ll go to the party with you,” I confirmed.

“Yes!” Thomas whooped.

“You’re an idiot,” I shook my head, laughing.

“An idiot will be with the most beautiful girl at the party tonight,” Thomas noted.

“But an idiot nonetheless.” I couldn’t help but smile.
