A/N: This is the first story I wrote to be part of this book, but I noticed a lot of people read this chapter then stop reading my stories. I felt like this was not the best story to start on since I feel it does not properly demonstrate my skills as a writer, however I would like to keep this story as part of this book. Anyway, thanks for reading :)

When Mcree woke up in his quarters, he had only one thought on his mind: breakfast. He had skipped dinner last night in order to train at the pratice range and didn't get a chance to grab any grub before heading to bed. He looked up at his alarm clock and realised that he was already five minutes late to breakfast in the cafeteria, but he still had plenty of time to make it. He was too tired to rush, so he took his time while fixing his hair and getting dressed.
He made it to the cafeteria, now ten minutes late, and scaned the room. Genji was sitting all by hinself with his back to everyone. Most of the heros from when Overwatch first began sat together, and the newer recruits sat scattered in groups across the cafeteria.
As Mcree walked past Ana's table, she heckled him for being late, saying she thought he was dead since he missed dinner, too.
Mcree laughed, "If I were in your shoes, I probably would've sent a search party."
"We considered it. We were gonna give you another five minutes, then we would have sent Genji after you." She gestured towards the cyborg sitting alone and staring towards the door.
When Mcree finally got his tray, he went to sit by Genji.
"Mornin' Genji", he said, a bit more cheerful now that he had food.
"Hm? Oh, Hello, Jesse.", Genji replied, looking from the door to Mcree.
"You looked a little lonely. Ya don't mind if I sit with you, do ya?" The cyborg shook his head.
"Are you waiting for Zenyatta or something?" Mcree continued.
"Zenyatta is on a mission in Napal. I am waiting for my brother. I didn't see him when I walked in."
"Come to think of it, neither have I..." Mcree scanned the room. Then he caught Hanzo's eyes. He was sitting at Ana's table, yet he didn't notice him there a second ago. He must have been too tired to be fully aware of his surroundings.
When Mcree didn't say anything else, Genji turned to look at what Mcree was staring at. As soon as he did, Hanzo's gaze shifted from Mcree to Genji. They both suddenly seemed a bit hostile, though they didn't move a single muscle. Hanzo stood, excused himself from Ana's table, and started towards Genji's. Some of the chatter in the cafeteria died down as Hanzo walked. Everyone seemed worried about what he would do.
The majority cafeteria held its breath as Hanzo stood in front of Genji. Mcree knew that Genji and Hanzo had their differences, but he didn't ask why. Neither had said a word, but they both seemed like they were in the middle of an argument.
Everyone let out a silent sigh of relief when Hanzo simply sat down next to Genji, just glad that the encounter didn't end in bloodshed yet.
"Brother," Genji said, leaning back a little to gesture to the cowboy. "You remember Mcree, don't you? You've both meet a few times."
Hanzo didn't seem to reconize Mecree, so Mcree held out his hand. "The name's Jesse Mcree. Nice ta' see ya again."
Hanzo hesitantly shook Mcree's hand. "Shimada, Hanzo Shinada." Hanzo seemed confused by the cowboy sitting in next to his brother, both because of the hand shake and his outfit. "It is... nice to see you as well."
Genji leaned forward again, blocking Hanzo and Mcree's veiw of each other. Mcree began to eat his breakfast as Hanzo and Genji spoke to each other in Japanese.
Suddenly Hanzo slammed his fist on the table. Mcree turned to face the two, his mouth too full to ask what was wrong. Once again most of the cafeteria turned to watch the brothers, if not just out of the corner of there eyes.
"Geez, someone has a temper." Genji said, speaking english again.
"Don't you dare say it." Hanzo growled quietly.
"Its almost as if you didn't want anyone to know its your birthday." Genji said, getting lounder when he said "birthday".
Lena Oxton was suddenly sitting on the seat opposite to Hanzo. "It's your birthda', love? Why didn't you say anything! Birthdays are so much fun!"
Before anyone could stop her, Lena had zapped around the room. First she disappeared entirely, only to reappear behind Hanzo with a party hat. No one could think of a reason she would have one. Lena was just full of surprises. She teleported to the kitchen and appeared again with a muffin and a lit birthday candle. Finally she appeared the other side of the table and began singing her favorite birthday song. To make things less awkard, or maybe just to keep Hanzo from targeting Lena if he lashed out, a few people (and a certian gorilla) joined in the singing as she went.
"Happy birthday to you!
You live in a zoo!
You look like a monkey!
And you smell like one, too!"
Hanzo stood up quickly, throwing the party hat from his head and leaving swiftly. Genji followed suit, leaving through the other pair of doors across the cafeteria.
"Was the whole 'you look like a monkey' thing to harsh" Lena said, embarrassed for herself and Hanzo. She didn't think he would get upset.
"I'm sure Hanzo liked the song, Lena. Its a great song." Mcree said, trying to comfort the woman and keep her from crying. "I'll go talk to him, maybe he just didn't understand the joke."
Winston walked over to Lena while Mcree rushed out if the room in search of Hanzo. There was only one route that anyone could take for a while, so Mcree would have to catch up to Hanzo before that route forked off into three different hallways if he wanted to find him as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Mcree reached the area where the hallways spilt and Hanzo was no where to be found.
He thought he should go to the pratice range. Mcree liked to hide there whenever he needed to blow off some steam, and Hanzo seemed like the sort of person who would do the same.
Mcree entered the pratice range and was a bit taken aback. One of the training dummies was shot full of arrows, to the point were it looked a gaint porcupine. Another had been shot with so much force that the entire dummy fell to the floor, the heavy stand still intact. The archer who shot the arrows was no where to be found, but Mcree had a gut feeling that he was still in the room. He looked up to the rafters, where he caught the man sitting, trying to hid in the shadows.
"Ya know, ya don't have to act like a cat chased up a tree. I just came to talk."
The man sat for a second longer before jumping down. He landed gracefully, not making a single noise as he did so. He stood before Mcree proudly, as though the whole incident in the cafeteria did not happen. He did not speak, so Mcree continued.
"Ya kinda' hurt Lena's feelings. She thinks you hated her birthday song, or her really. You really should go apologize, darlin'."
"That song was stupid and childish."Hanzo said, his voice full of anger. "Only a fool with no shame would sing such a thing."
"Tha' there didn't sound like a 'sorry', partner." Mcree responded. "Ya' see, here we don't really have a sense of shame. This whole place is technically illegal and we still got it runnin'. If we had any shame or self-respect we wouldn't be here, now would we?"
"You are a fool." Hanzo spat. "You don't even understand what's going-"
"I understand," Mcree interupted, "that you lashed out for no reason after Lena was all friendly like and tried to help you celebrate your birthday, and now I understand that you outta' go apologize if you don't want any trouble."
Hanzo hesitanted. He wasn't completely sure what to do next.
"Fine." He finally said after a long silence. "You are right. I should not have gotten angry at Lola-"
"Lena" Mcree corrected.
"Lena. I will go apologize."
Hanzo made to walk past Mcree, but he paused right beside the man as if he had just remembered something.
"Can you deliver a message to Genji for me?" Hanzo said, suddenly seeming a bit angry again. "I'd rather not talk to him today."
"A family otta' celebrate a birthday together"
"As far as he's concerned, I'm not family" Hanzo growled.
"Aw come on, Hanzo. You're to hard on yourself. Genji must still think of you as family, he still calls you brother and he-"
"He calls me brother out of smite!" Hanzo quickly turned to face Mcree. "Stop pretending you know whats going on. You know nothing!"
"If you really think I know nothing, why don't you explain, sugarplum." Mcree leaned against the wall, crossed his arms and waited. He was actually interested in hearing what Hanzo had to say.
"You wouldn't understand even if I explained, it's too complicated for a-a" Hanzo looked down at his hands, searching for the right thing to say "a simple cowboy fool like you to wrap your mind around..." Hanzo looked up to see Mcree suddenly towering over him. He seemed a lot shorter when he was standing across the room.
"'Simple cowboy fool', huh?" Mcree said, mocking the shorter man. Hanzo tried to back up but he hit a wall. He had unknowlingly cornered himself. Mecree took another step forward, setting one hand on the wall next to Hanzo's head and the other on his own hip. Hanzo became flustered and leaned as far as he could from Mcree as he worried about what would happen next. He was so defensive when it came to Lena, and the two didn't seem that close. He began to panic. He could only imagine what the gaint would do after Hanzo insulted him to his face. Hanzo stared towards the ground and braced himself for a punch to the gut or a kick in a rather unpleasant place.
But neither ever came. Mcree began to chuckle, and it grew into a warm and heartly laugh. Hanzo looked up to see him smile as he backed away.
"You Shimada's are a real hoot, ya' know." Hanzo was confused to see that Mcree wasn't angry, but also slightly glad. He wasn't sure the odds of him winning a fight against Mcree were stacked in his favor.
"I'll take a message to Genji for you, if you really don't want to see him. But you should just go talk to him. He's your brother after all."
Hanzo thought it would be best if he didn't correct Mcree this time. He was silent for a moment while he considered the best thing to say. Before he got a chance to speak, the door to the prating range opened and Genji stepped inside.
"How did you find me so fast, I thought you-" Hanzo began.
"Athena told me were to find you both." Genji said, cutting Hanzo off. "Did you forget about all the security in place?" He gestured towards the two cameras sitting above the door.
"You are an asshole, you know I don't like to celebrate my birthday. It is a childish thing to do and-"
"If you don't want to look like a child why do you act like one? Throwing temper-tantrums, running away when you are embarrassed-"
"Embarrassed! You humiliated me infront of an entire cafeteria of people!"
"I'm not the one who threw my hand down and stormed of crying!"
"I wasn't cry-"
Suddenly both Genji and Hanzo found themselves pulling way from each other. They were so busy arguing they had forgot about Mcree, who was now holding both of them as far away from each other as he could.
"Jesse, I swear if you don't let me go your going to need another robotic arm,"Genji growled lowly as he reached for the sword on his back with his free arm.
"Throwing out threats now, are we?" Hanzo remarked smugly as he grabbed his bow, though he would not be able to use it unless Mcree let go of his arm.
"Ryūjin no ken kurae!", Genji shouted. Before Mcree or Hanzo could react, Genji had pulled his arm free and had his sword out. Mcree tried to grab his arm or anything to stop him for stabbing Hanzo, but he missed. He went stumbling to the ground as Genji chased Hanzo around the room. With both hands free to use his bow, Hanzo stood a real chance. He did not want to shoot at Genji, but if he had to he would.
Suddenly the doors to the pratice range opened again as Soilder 76 and Ana rushed in. Soilder ran to the fallen Mcree while Ana targeted the two Shimada. Mcree could not see the brothers fighting and he couldn't stand up, but he could hear everything going on around him.
"Go to sleep", he heard the familiar voice say. Mcree couldn't help but laugh a little when he heard two dull thuds. Neither of the Shimada's ever made much noise; it seemed strange for them to thud when they fall.
"How's Mcree?" Ana asked before kneeling infront of him. She grabbed his arm and moved it from his covered chest. Genji's blade had sliced across his stomach, tearing open his shirt and staining what was left with blood.
"Nothing lethal." Soilder's voice was low, almost like a growl even when he tries to sound pleasant. "We should probably call Mercy."
------
When Mcree woke up, he was in a medical bed. He paniced for a moment, having woken in an different place than when he went to sleep. He did not remember falling alseep.
He looked over to his right. There was a little card that read "Sorry you almost died!"
The inside of the card had a cute little illustration of two bears, one in a hospital bed. "Guess that was kind of my fault. ♡Genji"
"Damn," Mcree muttered, "they make a card for everything these days."
"What does your card say?"
Mcree was startled by Hanzo's voice. He was standing next to the bed holding a card of his own. It looked like someone took five minutes to make it by hand.
Mcree showed Hanzo his card and Hanzo showed Mcree his own. Hanzo's had said "Sorry I almost killed you!" "I guess were even now. Happy birthday brother!"
"I guess were even now?" Mcree said, reading the card out loud. "What does that mean?"
Hanzo sat down in one of the chairs by Mcree's bed. "Its a long story."
"Ya' gonna tell me or am I gonna have to guess?" Mcree joked.
Hanzo grinned. "A simple cowboy fool like you wouldn't understand." Mcree laughed. Hanzo was glad he wasn't angry.
"You're lucky you're so cute and I don't have my gun, Shimada."
"You are a bit simple, Mcree. You know you shouldn't grab at other people's swords, right?"
Mcree snorted with laughter. Hanzo seemed confused; he hadn't made a joke. The look of innocent, doesn't-understand-what-he-just-said confusion on Hanzo's face made Mcree laugh even more.
The doors to the medical room opened and Mercy stepped in. "Ah, good, you're finally awake. Hanzo, I'm afraid I have to cut visiting hours short, I must talk to my patient."
"It's fine, Doctor Ziegler." Hanzo stood and turned to face Mcree. "I'm sorry about my behaviour earlier. As much as I hate to say it, my brother was right. I was acting like a child."
"Don't sweat it." Mcree smiled at Hanzo before he left.
"Someone's got a crush," Mercy mocked once Hanzo was gone.
"I do not!!" Mcree exclaimed as he blushed fiercely.
"Your beart rate is through the roof Mcree. In all seriousness, if you don't stop thinking about him, your chest may explode."
"Doctor Ziegler, you should really have some Mercy when it comes to teasing your patients."
