Silently, yet with a cordial countenance, I rose from the wing-backed chair and exited the Staffroom. Bloody useless mass of flesh, I snarled in thought. What good is defense without an interest in the attack? Passionless, scared, wimpy wizards and witches, the lot. Oh Merlin what is this world coming to? Am I asking too much to find other dark magicians? I rolled my eyes and stalked off to the back staircase.

Careful Maven, you promised to make friends not enemies and dark wizards rarely announce themselves, especially in the halls of a school. My recently developed moral mindset reminded my dark fiery attitude.

Right Maera, you are here for friends. So do not be picky.

Looking to the silver face of my pocket watch, I knew Quidditch practice was ending and dinner would be served soon. Quidditch brought another thought to my mind, Steve Laughalot, the Slytherin Team Captain. Automatically, my blue eyes rolled and I cringed at how brash the seventh year student acted towards me. He had no respect for his elders, and decided that flirting with me would not go unpunished. Of all people to know about relations with an authority, I was an expert. There again you go thinking of Gellert; Maven you must really stop this.

I know, I'm sorry Maera, I replied to my new found conscience.

Suddenly, I was being thrown against the wall as strong, but clumsy hands grabbed my waist. I was staring into the brown eyes and the grotesquely grinning face of Laughalot. "Miss Zeria, what are you doing here at Hogwarts, when you could be wooing your way to the top of the wizarding world?" He chuckled and brought his hideous face closer to mine.

Under the student's grasp, I was unable to reach my wand to protect myself no matter how much I writhed. Even in this moment, I could not bring myself to use my greatest card to defend myself. I stowed all churning in my stomach that told me to transform and kill the student.

You must not hurt any of these students, Maven. My conscience told me, and I obeyed.

Back and forth, I dodged his attempts to kiss me and when I tried to scream for help, not a sound escaped me. The seventh year must have used some sort of spell to keep me from calling out. The brutish student pulled and yanked at my resisting form.

If I don't transfigure now, we will be raped! I internally screamed at Maera. I tried to concentrate and transfigure into a beast that could easily fight back.

Yet within a moment, a man's voice shouted at Laughalot from down the lonely corridor. The attacker dropped me to the ground and I looked to the voice that saved me from being raped. It was Lucius Malfoy and his face was full of anger as he stormed over to the seventh year. "Laughalot! What the devil are you doing?" He roared, pulling out a smooth black wand from his robes and pointed it at the boy who was a year older than him.

"Having a bit of fun; what's it to you Malfoy?" The ruddy face of the seventeen year Quidditch captain spat. Laughalot walked sideways in reflection to Lucius' steps toward me.

"Miss Zeria, are you alright?" A slender hand reached out to me and I timidly took it with a sniffle and a nod. "It is everything to me, Laughalot; I am a prefect doing my duty and you have attempted to violate this woman, a member of the staff no less! HAVE YOU ANY SENSE OF DIGNITY!" Lucius roared and I flinched. The blond noticed this and calmed his voice to a hiss, "What have you to say for yourself, you disgusting beast that dare call yourself a wizard." Lucius directed his words to Laughalot who was no longer laughing, but grimacing.

"Going to do something about this are you, Malfoy? You think Dumbledore will believe you?" The sneering voice of Laughalot upset me, so I covered my ears and buried my head in the chest of the young man who held his arm around me. Even through my hands, I could hear Lucius' voice.

"You fool; you expect me to rely on that old crone Dumbledore? This is no matter to leave here unpunished." My blond protector muttered and pointed his wand down in a contemptuous manner at Laughalot.

I knew very well that if I were to intervene or attempt to control the situation with my magic, someone would surely die; and I was not about to have a death of a student on my hands. How was I ever supposed to be a proper disciplinarian if I was trapped in such a predicament? I bit my own tongue and wished for courage, but I only found darkness. I refused to let my dark magic take over now. This moment was not worth revealing my power, even if it meant resolving this situation.

I left Lucius to take charge of the present circumstances. "Expelliarmus!" The prefect shouted and swiftly disarmed Laughalot when he reached into his pocket for his wand. Then, Lucius took a sharp breath through his nose and burst, "STUPEFY!" Like a wave, blue light threw the offender against the opposing wall and dazed him. Lucius gently released his arm from around me and lunged over to the young man on the ground. "Crucio." A quick second of agony vibrated through Laughalot. Lucius did not seem to care he easily used an Unforgivable Curse on a fellow student. He grabbed the dazed Laughalot and snarled, "You stay away from Miss Zeria or, I swear—

My ears prickled to hear Lucius' dark words.

—I will kill you."

Heat burst into my chest as I recognized the telltale rage of a dark wizard.

Laughalot was very frightened and shaken as Lucius shoved and sent him running from the corridor, but my attention was no longer on Laughalot or the situation that passed.
