Christmas arrived and Abraxas decided to throw a celebration. The occasion called for Miss Maera Zeria to make her appearance once again. A sort of bittersweetness took Abraxas as he watch me shapeshift. "Metamorphmagus."
Waving my wand to dress me, I nodded, and he sighed.
"That must be quite a gift." He placed a wondrously rich necklace around my neck and clasped it in the back.
"And curse." My eyes followed his hands as they rested on my shoulders.
"My offer still stands." Abraxas kissed my bare shoulder. "I doubt I will ever retract it."
Turning around to face the man, my breaths came out slowly. "Thank you; I promise I will give you an answer before I return to Hogwarts."
"Excellent." He kissed my cheek, and ushered me down to the lower floors of the manor where many guests chattered with one another. After kissing my hand, Abraxas turned to greet his guests, many of which were fellow Slytherins from our year. None of them recognized me, but I heard conversation of a rising dark wizard named Voldemort. Slowly, I gleaned what I could from the conversations around me, but I remained indifferent in any debate.
When Lucius was able to find me in the crowd of guests—some of which were his friends and their families—he awed at me. "Seems like you and father are friends."
"No; I do wish him and I would be better strangers."
"Did he disappoint you?"
"Yes."
Lucius' brows knit with intrigue, "Do tell."
"I would rather not besmirch your image of your father."
"You don't have to spare me. But really, what happened?"
"Nothing that I wish to recall."
"Maera you are spoiling my fun."
"Good."
"Are you and I friends?" The bright eyes scanned me for answers.
"Yes, but I'm afraid we must discontinue the friendliness that has been occurring in private."
"Well, that's rotten." Lucius looked out to the guests and sipped from his wine goblet. "Was father that much of a barbarian to you?"
"Lucius," I snapped, "your father is a complete gentleman."
"And a scoundrel."
"I couldn't agree with you more." My wine goblet gently hit the side of his and we mingled with the guest and indulged in the Christmas festivities throughout the manor.
The celebration finished with a fireworks display over the garden. Mr. Abraxas Malfoy had quite the expensive taste, as I watched intricate magic working in the bursts of red, green, and white. The night lights revealed a trail of footprints imprinted in the snow leading away from the crowd. While everyone gathered around the garden pathway to better watch the fireworks, I followed the footprints. My feet took me to the small pavilion hidden by tall hedges and statues. Quiet sobs reached my ears.
"Lumos." I whispered to better see the dark figure in the pavilion. "Abraxas."
The man held back heavy emotions, and dried his eyes with a handkerchief. "The last time I held a party was with her. She loved parties, dances, and all sorts of social events."
Approaching him with and outstretched hand, I comfortingly rubbed his shoulder. Upon closer inspection, I noticed he was fiddling with a ring on his little finger. I moved my hand to hold his. He remained silent as I took his wife's ring from him and placed it around my ring finger. "It fits." I smiled, and kissed him.
"Perfectly."
"I'll need to complete my year at Hogwarts."
"I will arrange a summer wedding then."
"Excellent."
