Chapter 33: The Escape

"Mal."

I opened my eyes from my sleep to see Dad gently waking me up; as I sat up higher I looked and saw everyone down below against the floor as if they were ducking for cover.

"What's-" I began, but Dad pressed me to the floor.

"Walkers." Dad told me quietly, "A huge herd."

I stayed low but lifted my head and looked at the window to see walkers passing the gym. Lots of them. Probably one of the biggest herds I've ever seen.

I looked to my left to see Carol with a hand over Judith's mouth, keeping her from alerting the herd we were here.

I saw Rick edge towards the door; slowly; to reach for his gun.

I wasn't really sure what to do, everyone seemed to be staying quiet but I didn't feel safe; I knew I would if I had my knife.

"They'll pass soon." Maggie whispered to Sasha; which everyone could here I guess because everyone looked back at her.

We waited for a while. It was awkward I didn't like it, the groans of the walkers towered over Rick's whispering to Michonne as they planned the escape route.

Rick made a half-coughing, half-hinting noise and pointing to the trap door in the roof, everyone slowly made their way over to where Rick one, and one by one we began to enter the trap door and onto the roof.

We hug about on the rooftop, the cold air making us all hug our arms as we waited for an opportunity.

"Cold, sunshine?" said a familiar voice from behind me.

I didn't even bother turning around because it was quite obvious who it was.

"Here," Jace said, placing his jacket over me. I nodded in thanks. The constant clicking of Rick loading his gun was unbearable... this couldn't be good... But we needed to get back to the RV.

Rick looked at Michonne and she nodded.

"We're moving back to the RV... okay?" Said Rick towards everyone.

Sasha peered over the edge and looked down at the huge herd of walkers still moving across, "You want us to jump?"

Rick paused. "Is it that far of a jump?" He peered over himself. It was far down and with all the walkers below it made it wide.

"With Judith and Maggie pregnant... we can't make that jump," Said Sasha folding her arms.

"I'll do it." Interrupted Dad without any hesitation. "Draw em' away... then you lot get down and into the woods towards the RV, I'll be right behind ya"

Rick nodded at him.

"I'll go too- With Daryl" Said Jace, equipping his knife, "if things get crazy you can't defend yourself with fifty odd walkers coming at you"

"I can handle it fine." Growled Dad.

"Really?" Said Jace, in a testing sort of tone.

"You better watch yourself bitch-boy." Argued Dad getting closer to him.

"Who are you calling bitch-boy?" replied Jace, squaring him up.

Rick hissed at them furiously; "Would you stop!?"

I stood forward a little so I was close to my Dad, alerting Jace and Dad himself they needed to focus on the task, not ripping each other's throats out.

"I'll go with Daryl." Said Carl, "As long as you all can help Maggie and get away, it should be fine, just don't stop, Daryl and I will catch up..."

I didn't like this idea.

"Alright then..." Said Rick, but we sounded nervous.

It wasn't long before Dad and Carl lowered themselves down at the back of the gym and began to work there way around the side of the building, they waited for the right time.

Rick looked at Carol. "You got Judith? Once I get down, you lower her to me... okay?"

Carol nodded.

"Sasha and Malia... you got Maggie?"

We nodded.

Rick exchanged a glance with Michonne, to make sure she was ready for a fight... and at that moment we heard Dad and Carl attracting the walkers towards them, killing them off in a small massacre.

"Go-Go-Go." ordered Rick quickly. As him, Jace and Michonne jumped down, taking the impact with a grunt.

Sasha and I helped position Maggie on the edge as Jace and Rick grabbed her legs lowering her down gracefully.

Carol carefully dangled Judith over the side and Michonne grabbed her from down below, followed by Carol getting down herself then Sasha.

I swung my legs over and pushed myself off the edge, landing with a thud and the blood rushing to my feet, a bit my tounge and looked around, walkers that were not following Carl and Dad were already moving towards us, I glanced left and right and saw Sasha and Carol in the distance so I ran after them quickly.

We entered the forest but didn't stop, moving swiftly over the twigs and bushes deeper into the depths of the woods, all in a single file, In honestly I could barely tell if we had everyone... I guess we did... with the exception of Dad and Carl...

I felt someone following me and I spun around only to see Jace.

"It's just me sunshine, keep moving," he said calmly, I kept moving quickly, keeping at Sasha's heals.

"Did you see my Dad ? Or Carl ? Are they coming ?" I asked nervously.

Jace remained quiet.

"Did you!?" I repeated.

"No- No I didn't but I'm sure they're coming,"

I stopped dead in my tracks, making Jace crash into the back of me.

"Malia! Keep going! The walkers are still following us!" He told me, pushing me onwards.

I remained stubborn and didn't let his strength push me without a fight.

"Mali- fine. You know what fine," Said Jace rather annoyed, he picked me up with ease and threw me over his shoulder, running to catch up with the others.

"Put me down!" I hissed, thumping his back with my fists as I watch the forest floor move beneath me.

He didn't reply, nor did he put me down, I desperately tried to focus my vision as far into the distance as I could, hoping to see my Dad or Carl emerge from behind a tree, but nothing. Only walkers.

Something wasn't right... I just knew it.
