Nightmares

Once childish dreams
Of scary creepy crawlies,

Now frightening flashes
Of car crashes,

And embarrassing dances
That escape my mind,

And a terrible mistake
That causes friendships to fade,

And sickly family
That leave too early,

And a sharp edge
Of a pit that rushes by.

Increased heart rate,
Excessive sweating,
Worry beyond belief.

Driving too slow,
Lower than highway speeds,
Impact hitting hard.

Getting stage fright,
Unable to perform,
Hundreds laughing.

Forgetting a project,
Nothing to present,
A friend lost.

Dying family members,
Too ill and broken,
Resenting me.

Falling off a cliff,
Feeling unloved,
A resounding thud.

Jerking awake,
Hoping, for my sake,
Ignoring my headache,
Struggling to remain calm,
Waiting for my heart to explode like a bomb,
All the while wanting,
Needing,
To never fall asleep again.
