I woke just as the bell rang. "Janessa?" The teacher called out. "I'd like to speak to you." I groaned and reluctantly walked up to the desk.
"I'm sorry I fell asleep." I said. Even though I didn't fall asleep; I passed out.
"That's okay, just don't do it again."
"Okay." I nodded my head and walked out of the classroom. As I walked through the door, I slammed into a chest. I looked up, and seeing Samuel's face, I jumped.
"Sorry." I spoke quickly and tried to move out of his way.
He grabbed my arm and whispered in my ear, "We need to talk." I pulled my arm away from him.
"You almost killed me, more than once, and you expect me to go into a room alone with you and talk? I'm not suicidal, Samuel." I barked. "Just leave me alone Samuel. That's what you guys do to us wolves anyways. And besides, it's my birthday today, and I'd rather not be dead." I then turned on my heels and walked away.
Nathaniel came from around the corner. When he saw me, he walked up to me. "Don't speak. I'm mad." Nathaniel just smiled and I shook my head and laughed.
That's when I remembered my dream. It was weird how I saw myself wake up in a bed, even though I wasn't even near a bed. "What happened? Samuel make you mad?" he coaxed.
"I had a dream. When Samuel made me pass out in class." Nathaniel stopped me and dragged me into an empty classroom.
"What?" he asked me. He was obviously as puzzled as I was, which I was glad for.
"I had heard a voice in my head telling me to go to Samuel, that I was the only one that could save him, if I wanted to live."
"Let me see your stomach."
I laughed. "I don't even know you." but I pulled up my shirt. I looked down and it was the same as last time, maybe two more small bruises from where I clutched it before I passed out. Nathaniel ran his hand along my stomach, his hands were warm and I was freezing. I hadn't noticed how cold I was.
His eyes met mine and I smiled. "I-I'm cold." I shivered. Nathaniel let go of my shirt and hugged me. His body was warm, and seemed to fit against my body perfectly. I smiled as I became warmer.
"Here." Nathaniel said as he took off his sweater and gave it to me. I pulled it on and it smelled sweetly of pine and chocolate.
"Thanks." I laughed. I looked at the time. I was going to be turning 18 in a half hour, soon I would find my mate. Nathaniel smiled at me.
I believe I am falling for this lycan.
"We better get to class." I broke the silence after a moment or two. Nathaniel nodded his head quietly and we walked to gym class together.
•••
Once we got to gym, Nathaniel was crowded with people, mostly girls, but I was lucky I got out alive. I walked to the bleachers after I escaped the crowd and sat on the fifth row of bleachers. I listened intently to the conversations around me, but soon I zoned out and after a while, we were told to come down to the gym floor and the coach would pick two team captains.
"Samuel and..." the coach paused as he looked around for another team captain. "And Andrea." I mentally cursed when he said Samuels name. He was going to choose me so he could talk to me. "Go ahead. Choose your teams. Samuel can pick first."
"Janessa." His voice was low and shaky as if he were unsure in his decision, or as if he were trying to suppress a domination feeling. I unsteadily walked to his side of the gym, and as I walked, he gave me a sly look that said we need to talk.
Then I heard Andrea say, "Nathaniel." He gave me a look of sympathy as he walked to the opposite side of the gym. I brushed past Samuel as he called another name, and Nathaniel did the same. He met me in the middle of the gym and we stood next to each other, watching.
"He wants to talk to me." I whispered. "Alone. I'm afraid he'll kill me."
Nathaniel scanned me for a while, gazing a little too long at my body. "I'll talk him into letting me be there. Or at least stand outside the door. Would that be okay?" I nodded my head and looked into his eyes.
"Alright you two lovebirds! It's time to play!" The coach yelled and everyone laughed. And I think Nathaniel blushed a little.
The coach was holding a basketball, and I smiled. I was pretty good at basketball, and I liked it a lot.
As we got into our positions, the two team captains were getting ready for the toss up of the ball. Everything was silent for a moment and then suddenly, there were squeaking of sneakers and shouting.
I suddenly didn't feel so well. But, it didn't feel like the domination radiating off of Samuel. No, it was stronger, and made me feel like I wasn't in control of my body. I tasted a warm metallic substance in my mouth, and I ran as fast as I could to the bathroom.
As soon as I got in there, I leaned over one of the toilets and started puking up blood. "What the hell?" I heard a female voice say.
"Stop. Don't look." I choked. "Can you get Nathaniel, please?" I then threw up another mouthful.
"O-ok." She stammered, then ran out of the bathroom.
I whispered as she left, "quickly."
My eyes felt heavy as I leaned over the pool of blood in the toilet. Then the door to the bathroom flew open and the whole class crowded inside.
Before everything went black, I remember puking one last time, and Nathaniel and Samuel trying to make their way to the front of the crowd.
