"No," he said aloud. "Shit."
"What's wrong?" Jean said as he peered curiously over the vampire's shoulder. "Oh. Oh Lord."
"He's dying..." Levi trailed off as he caressed Eren's face. "I won't be able to heal him with my abilities."
"But he's coming back, right? If he's bitten it means he will come back as one of your kind, correct?" Sasha questioned as she kneeled down next to him, her teeth biting into her bottom lip.
Levi didn't answer. Vampire venom was tricky; if one had too much of it in their system it meant a promise to be with death, too little meant turning for sure. Levi couldn't tell whether or not he had too little or too much. It was too late to try to suck the venom out because he was certain it would do nothing at all. Levi watched helplessly as the movement of Eren's chest began to gradually get more faint. There were two possibilities; one, he would never be able to see his eyes again and second, he would see them in a whole different colour. Levi felt numb and suddenly his whole mind was racing with a big fat "what if?" What if he had tried harder to stop Eren from leaving the cell without him? What if he wasn't bitten? What if he killed Petra much sooner to prevent this whole gory mayhem? He held his hand in his as the chaos in his mind continued to unravel.
"What's going on here?" an irritating but clear voice shouted. Levi knew right away that it belonged to the crazy scientist lady that Eren would sometimes bring up in conversations.
"Eren's in trouble. He was bitten," Sasha answered and looked over her shoulder.
Following his gut and his instinct, Levi growled as he shielded Eren's body with his. A couple of other soldiers were standing by Hanji's side. All of them but her jumped back in fear. She looked down at him with a big goofy smile in her face.
"No need to be so guarded. We won't take him away from you," she told him as she dropped all her visible weapons to the ground, making a big "thunk" sound. "We need to quarantine him, but that's the only time when you will be away from him."
"What makes you think I'll believe you?" Levi snarled.
"Because I only want peace, and I doubt tearing him away from you will do any good, now wouldn't it?" she said as she readjusted her goggles.
"She's right," Jean added. "No offence, but it was Erwin that had a different idea on how peace should be achieved. You can trust Hanji not to take lover boy away from you."
Levi looked at them with a miffed expression on his face as he tightened his grip on Eren.
"I'm going where he's going. You can isolate him, but I need to be there with him," Levi instructed.
"Of course, consider your request granted. I know better than to disagree with a rogue, especially the notorious Levi," she promised with a small wink. Her eyes trailed down toward a limp looking Eren, her mouth parting in interest. "He's turning right now, correct?"
"Yes," Levi confirmed. "I usually don't like asking for favours from humans, but I'd like to get to your head quarters or camp or whatever you call it before he wakes. It's dangerous to have him out here in the open, especially with the sun shining down on us. It decreases his chance of... coming back."
"Alright. Bodt, go find a horse for Eren and Levi immediately. We need to get him in a closed area as soon as possible," Hanji shouted over to a freckled soldier, who so happened to be standing by awkwardly. He flashed Jean a stare before doing the task at hand.
Levi rubbed a hand over Eren's chest gingerly to feel for any bruises, only to find that the wild beating of his once lively heart was no where to be found.
