My eyes flutter open and I'm blinded by the white hospital light. The last thing I remember I was falling off a ladder. I'm not hurt- I don't think. I'm just finding it really hard to breathe. At least I saved Mitch. That is all that matters...
"Miss Halllico?" The doctor says, walking up to me.
"Hello..." I say.
"Hi." The doctor says.
She sits by me.
"Listen..." She says. "You inhaled an incredible amount of smoke..."
"I figured." I cough.
She sighs.
"Amber..." She says. "I know you're pregnant. And this isn't good for your baby. The lack of oxygen can cause all sort of problems that can lead to premature delivery, stillborn delivery-"
"I know- but I had to save a friend..." I say.
This is the doctor that talks to me about my baby a lot. She was the one that told me my baby's gender.
"I'm sorry..." I say.
"Don't be..." She says. "But you need to start taking care of youself- before it's too late. You need to realise that you're six months pregnant, Amber. You're going to have to stop and think about every action for the sake of your health and the baby's health. I understand that you ran into a burning building-"
"To save my friend. Yes." I say.
"Yes- but. Someone else....someone else that wasn't pregnant could have done that. Like a fireman." She nods.
She's talking to me like I'm four.
Then she attaches an oxygen mask to me because I start coughing madly.
"Seriously," she mutters. "Your lungs are filled with smoke..."
"Can I see Mitch? Or Perri?" I ask.
"If you let me put this on you..." She sighs.
She hands me the mask.
"Don't take it off." She says firmly, before leaving.
I breathe in and out then I look down at my stomach. I hope I didn't hurt him. Well- he has a strong mother. So he will be strong...
At that moment Perri walks in. He looks like he's been pacing up and down. He immediately kneels beside me.
"You seem to think you're superman..." He says. "What the hell was that?"
"It was called saving Mitch's life! None of you even realised he was missing!" I say.
"The firemen were looking for a safe way to get him-"
"They were taking too long-"
"You only just got out of there on time-"
"Exactly!" I exclaim. "I'm the one that knew there was another door. I had to get up there."
"You didn't!" Perri shouts. "You put your life and our baby's life in danger- don't you see that? Don't you care?"
"Of course I care. But I care about Mitch. And I didn't get hurt..." I say.
Perri grabs my arm revealing a tiny burn.
Where did that come from?
"So?" I say. "It doesn't hurt!"
"It could have been worse..." Perri says. "When you ran in the firemen put a ladder to the window. I climbed up it and that really pissed them off. Then after I got down I thought you were already climbing down but you were still at the top...then you started falling. The ladder fell all the way down but the end hit the firetruck luckily. I think you still passed out with the shock."
