Chapter 11
.
I took the time we had driving to call my mom. As we zipped by the Los Angeles scene, my heart was back home with my mother. I quickly dialed the number on the limo phone, then listened to the dial tone. Mom picked up on the third ring.
"Hello?" she answered uncertainly. Mom always thought numbers she didn't know were telemarketers.
"Hi mom, it's Onika" I said, tears welling up in my eyes. Gosh I was stupid, I was having the time of my life, yet I felt like crying. After everything that I had gone through, it all started to come back as I listened to my mother's steady voice and her sigh of relief. I felt like a little girl, suddenly lost and needing my mommy's reassuring hug.
"Onika, baby I think I saw you on television!" she said, shocked. "With your new friends".
I sighed. If my mom was able to see me, it must mean we were everywhere. Mom wasn't exactly tech savy.
"What did it say?" I asked hesitantly, not wanting to show too much emotion in front of everybody.
"It claimed you were Harry's new girlfriend" she said. Then her voice dropped to a whisper. "They found out your name. They called you Onika Kirkwood on national television. They know who you are."
Oh Lord. They know who I am. I froze, the my fingers clutched around the telephone. How did they find out? What else did they know about me? My fear escalated by the second, and I began to panic. What if they find my twitter, my Facebook? I won't be able to escape it. I was breathless, my mouth dry, and found it hard to speak again. But I couldn't show my true panic in front of people who went through this everyday.
"Oh mom, don't worry about it!" I said in a mock cheery tone. "Our main focus should be on plane tickets. The boys don't leave until Wednesday, I'm sure we can get a flight in that time period. The boys were generous enough to offer me a place to stay until then anyways. In fact, I should probably let Harry talk to you" I said, making my mom realize I was in their presence. I passed the phone over to Harry, who looked a bit confused, but accepted the phone.
"Hello, Mrs. Kirkwood? Yes this is Harry" he began. I knew Mom was curious to see who I was spending all this time with.
"No, it's no problem, she's a really nice girl, we get on quite well" he said into the reciever. "Yes, Wednesday we fly to Australia" He paused. "Work." He said smiling. My mom would test him like an other boy. Which meant he would be grilled like a steak.
"I promise to take good care of her Mrs. Kirkwood. Okay. Take care, here's Onika" he said, returning the phone back to me.
"Well isn't he a charmer" she said, and I visualized her waggling her eyebrows. I rolled my eyes, stifling a laugh.
"Mom, focus. Do you think you can book a flight?" I asked.
"I'm sure I can. I'll go online now and book it, I'll send you the details on Facebook tonight sweetie. But I've got to go, I left the hose running in the yard. Talk to you later!"
"Bye mom, I love you" I said, wanting to talk to her longer.
"Love you too" she said, and I clicked off the telephone.
Talking to my mom brought me back to reality, and pulled me out of the clouds a little. As we dropped off Niall and Zayn on Rodeo Drive, Liam and Danielle at the Getty Center and Louis and Eleanor at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, I realized all they were doing for me, and I was feeling guilty. No dinner could make up for what they had done. What they were continuing to do.
When only Harry and I were the only ones left in the limo, I leaned into him and he stroked my hair like our first night together.
"Your mom seems nice" he commented.
