Chapter 21
.
I was momentarily speechless, my brain unable to compute. Here was my boyfriend, who was supposed to be in the UK, standing on my front step handing me flowers. His hair was perfectly styled, his smile was warm and comforting, and his presence alone was enough for me to feel an electric current zap down my spine.
When I snapped back to reality, I dove into his arms. I almost knocked him over in the force of my hug, which made him laugh.
"Well it's nice to see you too" he said chuckling.
I looked up into those green eyes I had missed so much, and saw a twinkle of smile. The cool March air caused me to shiver, but I also shivered in anticipation. Tonight was all ours.
Seeing me cold, Harry frowned.
"You tell me to bring a parka, and you're freezing yourself to death. Even though you do look amazing" he said, eyeing my short, strapless dress. I rolled my eyes.
"Let me grab a sweater then Saint Harold" I said, and he laughed. It hurt to leave his embrace, but my hand never left his as I pulled him through the doorway.
I walked into the warm kitchen, and it did remind my skin that I had been quite cold. I lead Harry past the kitchen to the dining room, where my mother was innocently reading a novel and humming lightly to herself.
"Mother, do you know who this strange boy is?" I asked her, pretending to be puzzled. She looked up from her book, and continued the act.
"I have no idea who that is!" she said in mock sincerity.
"Hello Mrs. Kirkwood" Harry said in his deep voice, winking at my now smiling mother.
"You two know each other?" I asked, surprised.
"How else would I know where you live?" Harry asked. Mom had been in on the whole thing. I looked over at her, and I could tell she was relishing the outcome of her scheme.
"Where are you staying tonight?" Mom asked Harry politely.
"Well, I drove down from the airport, but haven't gotten my accommodations together yet" he admitted.
"My parents run a bed and breakfast upstairs, you can stay with us" I said, without asking Mom.
"Of course you're welcome to stay here. I can even get your room ready while you two are out tonight. It will be ready when you get back" she said, smiling even brighter.
"I really appreciate that. Speaking of getting back, what time should I have your daughter home?" he asked, sounding just like a proper English gentleman.
"You two are adults; come home whenever you want to" she said, and I was surprised she hadn't said something like "Be back by 9:30 or I will saw your heads off."
"Well, we better be going" I said, trailing off. Mom caught the hint that I wanted to be alone with Harry, and she smiled again.
"Have a fun time you two!" she called after us, and I quickly grabbed a sweater as we walked out the door.
The first thing I saw was the car. He had rented a sleek Audi coupe, with shining chrome rims and a fluid shape. The doors were angular and elegant, and the paint job was immaculate. I was marvelling over it's beauty, and Harry could tell by the expression on my face.
"You like cars?" he asked curiously. My gaze was broken as I looked up at him.
"Like cars? I love cars! Is this the new Audi R8?" I asked shocked. They were cars that basically cost $140,000.
