Chapter 4
.
A sly smile crept upon Zayn's handsome face, and I felt my own face grow hot. Oh joy, I was blushing. I was supposed to act cool, but my heart was racing. I felt like I was going to throw up.
"I'm sorry, I was looking for my seat and"...I began, keeping my nerves at bay.
"And you were just searching for your number. It's okay" Liam said with a heart melting smile.
"Looks like I will be sitting beside you anyways" I said casually, walking over to my seat. "Yup, Row 1, Seat 26, Section A" I mused aloud. I pointedly sat in my seat, crossed my legs and smiled.
My whole body felt like I was going to burst into flame at any moment. Here I was, sitting next to the boys, and I have embarrassed myself already. As the color left my cheeks, I sighed in relief. I had to keep my cool.
Niall's sea blue eyes sparkled as he spoke up.
"What's your name?" he asked with a cute smile and in his adorable Irish accent. I was so mesmerized by the sheen of his bleach blond hair shining in the light that I almost didn't answer him.
"Onika Kirkwood, at your service" I replied with a teasing smile. The sound of a soft laugh from my direct left caught my attention, and when I looked, I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed who I was sitting beside.
Time seemed to stop, and this gave me a proper chance to look at him. His green eyes danced in the lights of the stage, and they were like pools of jade, ones that I wanted to drown in forever. He had perfectly shaped eyebrows, not a hair out of place. His nose was straight and round at the end, but in a gorgeous way. His smooth, tanned skin stretched into the most breathtaking smile I had ever seen, complete with dimples. His lips, full and smooth, stretched to reveal a dazzling set of straight teeth. I was stuck staring at his perfect face, looking at each eyelash, marveling over his flawless skin. When my eyes travelled up to his hair, my heatbeat increased again. The soft brown curls fell around his face, and they reflected the sheen of the lights. I had to exercize extreme control to not reach out and stroke his curly locks, but I knew better. Remain calm.
It was his words that brought me back to them. His deep voice, almost mocking, repeated my words.
"Onika Kirkwood, at your service hmm?" he said, a mischievous smile creeping on his lips.
"Well, what was I supposed to say. My name is Onika? That would have been the end of the conversation. If you had any tact, you would know that yourself" I replied, teasing him even more.
A round of "Ooohs" followed my remark, followed by laughter and a comment by Loius.
"Trust me", Louis began, still laughing. "Harry has all of the tact that he needs".
The boys burst out in laughter again, and Harry punched Louis in the arm, mumbling something that sounded like "Stop it".
"I have plenty of tact, thank you very much" Harry replied, trying to save his pride.
"Prove it to me. Pretend that I have no idea who you are, that I'm some girl that you fancy and that we just met. How would you break the ice?"
I was thinking on my feet, trying deperately to find a reason to keep his voice talking, to keep hearing the voice of an angel.
"I would ask you questions about yourself" he replied simply. At this moment, the rest of the boys became bored, and started having conversations of their own.
"Interesting" I said casually. "I expected for you to perhaps impress me with your dancing skills, but questions will have to do"
He smiled to himself. I wondered if he had figured out that I was a fan yet.
"Hello, my name is Harry Styles" he began politely.
"And I am Onika Kirkwood" I replied with a shy smile.
"Onika, what a lovely name to match a lovely face" he said coyly.
I looked at my feet and smiled sadly. My face was far from lovely. Years of acne has left scars, and since I refused to wear makeup, they weren't hidden. My eyes were two different shades of blue, mixed with green and gray. I had a big nose, my lips weren't nice. I wasn't lovely. I was ugly.
"Aren't you a charmer" I said, not knowing how to reply.
"Let's find out. Where are you from?" he said, keeping the conversation going.
"Pottstown, Canada. It's a tiny community, with about one hundred residents. It's a really boring place."
"Sounds like Holmes Chapel" Harry agreed. "But how did you end up here in the big city?"
"I won a radio contest by naming all five members of this really cool band, they are supposed to be coming here tonight." I smiled really wide.
"Is that so? I'm in a band, what a coincidence" Harry winked. My heart fluttered.
"I think I know your band actually. You must be the singer from White Eskimo" I said enthusiastically.
Harry's laugh rang through the stadium, and I couldn't help but giggle. I had always known he would be perfect.
Long after the lights went down, we continued in this bantering way. The subjects ranged from our favourite foods, to our friends, to our musical likes.
We were so similar, it was beginning to scare me. We both loved "The Notebook" "Love, Actually" and "Titanic", The Beatles and Queen, the color pink. Even our moms have the same name. It was, in a cheesy sense, like we were made for each other.
We had to keep whispering to each other, and I had to stifle my giggling because we were still at an awards show. I only caught a few things from what was going on around me; I was too preoccupied. The only light in the room was radiating out of Harry. He was the center of my attention.
He made me feel so happy. His warm breath on my neck as he would whisper a cheeky answer. His sense of humor, taste in music. His smile was everything. He made me forget all of my worries. I had always hoped that if I had ever had the chance to meet him, that I would treat him with respect. And I was. I obviously loved 1D, but had never had, say 5,000 pictures of them on my computer. They were people like you and me, and deserved respect and privacy like anybody else. He was a normal human being, with normal feelings, and who possesed the ability to make me forget all of the wrongs in my life. Even the fact that I didn't have a place to stay for the night.
I was pouring out my heart to him. I told him things that I kept to myself. The fact that I sometimes cried myself to sleep. That I was lonely. That I was afraid that people judged me and would never accept me. He looked like he genuinely understood, and I felt so blessed to have him here. Within an hour, I felt like he had become my rock, my shoulder to lean on.
We were so engrossed with our discussion that we were startled when the runner came to collect the boys for their performance. The other boys looked bored out of their minds with the show, but began laughing again with they saw us. The earlier gift of a punch for Louis was extended to include each of them. As they were leaving, he flashed me a brilliant smile. I mouthed the words "Good Luck" and gave him a thumbs up.
The runner had told me that they would be performing in 20 minutes. I realized how stiff I had become, legs crossed and leaning to my left for an hour. I thought this was a perfect time to stretch my legs and freshen up before the boys performed. I wasn't here for anybody else but them anyhow.
I found my way to the bathroon, nothing else on my mind than Harry. Every single cell in my body was thinking about him, even those that couldn't technically think. His smile blazed through my mind, the image of an angel. His voice was still ringing in my ears, his presence still by my side.
As I went to check on my bags in the area where I had stored them, I was halted. A cold sensation filled my stomach, and my world flipped upside down once again.
My bags were gone. All of my clothes, my money, my phone..everything but the clothes on my back had been in my bags. And they were gone.
I was stranded in Los Angeles, with no place to stay, no money, no food, nothing.
