Chapter 22
.
Enrique Inglesias should be given a Nobel Prize just for writing the song "Hero". As we slowly twirled around in circles, I contemplated how truly lucky I was. All of the girls in the world who wished they were doing exactly I was doing. I smiled, knowing that my destiny was turning out quite well so far.
The song choice fit perfectly with everything that had been going on. Harry really was my hero. He had saved me from myself, saved me from drowing, and saved me from those thugs. I wondered why. Why he had felt the need to do that. Why he even wanted to be with me. I honestly couldn't wrap me head around it. But I don't question destiny. I just let things play out, let things unfold, and just go with the flow.
Many songs followed, but none hit home as much as that one. In short, the dance was amazing. My friends clicked with Harry from the word go, and they let us have time alone all along. We danced to the fast songs, the slow songs, and talked all the while. We mingled but kept to ourselves. Maybe ai'm selfish, but I really didn't want to share him with people I wasn't particularly fond of. We still managed to have an absolute ball.
When the whole affair was over, everybody was piling into their cars, and I had the pleasure to be escorted back to the beautiful Audi by the gorgeous guy on my arm. Most people were getting into their parents' cars, and even their parents were looking at our ride. I felt like I was a princess, like I was special. That rarely happens, so I savoured the moment.
When we got into the car, both of us were smiling.
"That is what I meant by losers" I said, laughing, referencing to my over-excitable friends.
"You have nice friends" Harry replied smiling. "I'm sure the boys will love to have them with us."
"I know they will. If they liked me, they'll love them" I said, rolling my eyes.
"Don't kid yourself; your friends are absolutely lovely, but they aren't as lovely you. But maybe I'm biased" he said, his eyes sparkling. He was too kind, my friends were all basically models, while I was more like a stick of celery. Skinny, stringy, lanky, I could continue on and on.
"Stop it" I said, teasingly pushing him. Smiling smugly, Harry started the car, and we started to pull out of the parking lot. The sky was pitch, but the stars twinkled like beacons in the sky. None of those were helicopters; they were all works of art, created my Mother Nature herself.
"Turn here" I said spontaneously a few minutes later, and Harry raised an eyebrow. He didn't question me as we turned into a worn dirt road. The grass was high and the road was dark, and on either side of the road were wide fields with flattened grass from the winter. Small wildflowers tried to seed themselves in the unruly grass, but it was much too early for them to survive.
"Now park" I commanded, and he did as I asked. The lights on the Audi slowly dimmed, and I grinned widely. I looked over at both fields, and decided that the one on the left would be suitable.
"Now it's your turn to trust me. Get out of the car, and close your eyes" I said happily. He looked slightly confused but did what I said. I took off my high heeled shoes and opted to go barefoot. Growing up in the country makes you not think twice about things like walking outside barefoot. We don't see it as a health hazard, or gross, or however you would see it. We see it as a way of life. It was unseasonably warm for the end of March anyways. We geneally have weather of two degrees, but it was about fifteen. I did, however, put on my warm sweater. I wasn't absolutely crazy...well...maybe I was. My sanity was still up for debate.
I walked over to the other side of the car, where Harry was standing, eyes closed, hands in pockets, and smiling charmingly. He looked like a Greek statue, almost too perfect to be real.
