Ponyboy's POV:

"No Jazz before the rumble you know the rules ape face."

"We know." Randy said to Two-Bit. "I wanna talk to you." He said looking at me. I stood there uncomfortably. I looked at Two-Bit.

"Go ahead I'll keep my eye on him."

Carolyn and I let go of each other's hands and I followed Randy while the other Socs stayed with them. I was surprised I had the guts to reach for her hand. Or did she reach for mine? Maybe we both did.

"Heard about you in the paper... how come?" He said as we leaned against his car.

"I don't know

"I don't know. I like being a super hero or something." I said with sarcasm.

"I would have let those little kids burn to death."

"You might not have. You might've done the same thing." I challenged. I kept my eye on Carolyn from the distance even though she was with Two-Bit. I'd take off on Randy if any of those Socs tried something on her.

"I don't know. I just would have never have believed a greaser would pull something like that."

"A greasers got nothing to do with it." I defended.

We got inside his car and sat down. I grabbed onto the hood and listened to whatever else he had to say.

"Couldn't tell this to anyone else or my friends would think I'm off my rock or something, you know the friend of yours that got burned, he might die?"

"Yeah." I felt a lump in my throat and a sick feeling come to my stomach.

"Can't win. Doesn't matter if you whip us you'll still be at the bottom where you were before," He said referring to the rumble coming soon. "and we'll still be the lucky ones at the top, greasers will still be greasers and socs will still be socs, it doesn't matter." he said bitterly. I was shocked to hear this.

There was a moment of silence

There was a moment of silence.

"Anyway, thanks grease," I didn't know what to say and opened the car door. "Hey I didn't mean that, I mean't thanks kid." I turned back to him and stuck out my hand. "Nice talkin' to you Randy, my name's Ponyboy." I shook his hand and after I got out he stopped me again.
