Ponyboy's POV:

I ran out of the house to catch up with the boys, so tempted to run back to Carolyn. I felt awful leaving her by herself worried sick about this whole thing but I had to do this.

They were near the end of the street when I caught up with them. Two-Bit carried a beer and they were all pumped up to fight and I joined in. We were excited to fight the Socs to maybe show a few 'em who we are once and for all. I hopped on Darry's back and then he put me down when we got to where the rumble was happening. Tim Shepard and the rest of the greasers stood there waiting by a big flaming fire pit.

"How you doin' Tim?" Darry said going up to him with us following him.

"Pretty good." He shook his hand. I stood next to Darry and looked at him. "You and the quiet kid are the ones that killed the Soc?" Tim said to me. "Yeah." I nodded. "Good goin' kid. Darrell always said you were a good kid." I stood there with out knowin' what to say.

From a distance we saw the Socs pull up in their mustangs. They came out with some beers and their rich lookin' pants and sweaters. Their clothes wouldn't look that nice after this.

All us greasers lined up side by side.

"Stay close." Darry said to me and walked up to the Socs and started talking to the one guy Paul at the front who he used to play football with.

"I'll take you." Paul said. Darry stood there for a moment and Dally came running from behind yelling "DON'T START WITHOUT ME!" As soon as I turned back around from lookin' behind at him I was punched by a Soc knockin' the wind out of me. That's when the rumble started and every greaser and Soc were fighting.

The Soc that punched me leaned down over me to punch me more

The Soc that punched me leaned down over me to punch me more. I could already feel blood gushing out of my nose. I reached for the Soc's hands to stop punching me and attempted to punch him back but he was quite bigger than me. I kept trying to get up with all my might but he kept kicking me down. It was starting to rain like crazy and now there were two Socs beatin' me up. Hearing the rip of them pulling on my shirt I was punched more. I began to loose feeling in my mouth and nose from being punched out. The other Socs kept kicking me all over. I tried my hardest to fight back but my vision was gettin'blurry as he started poundin' at my eye. I was screwed. I couldn't let Carolyn see me like this.

The ground was gettin' wet and two more Socs came on me. I felt it gettin' muddy around me and it was gettin' all in my clothes and hair. I was gettin' weaker and weaker as all four Socs pounded and kicked me. I could barely move or get up.

The rumble lasted about 20 minutes and as Socs started running away Darry threw them off me as I sat there never feeling worse.

"You okay Pony?!" He said kneeling in front of me holding me up but then got up and let go when all the other greasers cheering because we beat the Socs in the rumble. They were all gone. I was about to fall back down onto the wet muddy grass when Dally grabbed me under my arms while I was still sitting up and dragged me out of the way. He pulled me up so that I could stand.

"You okay?!" he yelled over all the cheering. I couldn't even talk to him so he grabbed me and put me in his car.

Speeding on the dark streets a cop on a motorcycle came after us. "Act like you fell off your motorcycle." Dally nudged me as we pulled over for the cop. I couldn't talk anyway. I was a zombie.

"This kid, he fell off his motorcycle I'm takin' him to the hospital." Dally said.

The cop stared at me. Blood was drippin' down my forehead, mouth and nose. My left eye was black and blue. I groaned in pain and the cop let us go.

The side of Dally's forehead on his eye brow was swollen and red.

He started mumblin' somethin' about Johnny stayin' out of trouble.

"If he was smart like me, we wouldn't have been in this mess, if he was smart like me he wouldn't have ran into that church man, you better wise up too man."

He said as I lifted my head up. "If you're tough like me you don't get hurt man." He said hitting his fist down.  He was gettin' heated.

"Where's blondie, at the house?" he said

"Where's blondie, at the house?" he said. "Uh huh..." I said with my jaw throbbing. "Kay, were gonna get her and see Johnny."

"No... she can't see me like-"

"Who cares, you ass, she's all alone, she's gotta see him too."

"I promised... her... i'd be okay..."

"She your girlfriend now Ponyboy?"

I looked at him in shock. "How'd you-"

"I knew ya liked her and knew she liked you simple as that. I'll be back." He said as we pulled in front of the house and ran into get her. I was confused.

A minute later they came back out and she went in the middle of the back seat. She couldn't see my face and it was dark. We started driving to the hospital.

"Pony," she hugged me from the back seat. I hugged her back. "I'm so happy it's over are you guys okay?!" She panicked a little. "We're fine but this one not so much." he said. I looked at Dally. If I could I would have given him a dirty look. There was silence from her in the back and it wasn't good.
