As I walk out on stage to see the thousands of people standing up waiting for me to sing. People start cheering lightly and I wave around. I was told to say a few words before beginning but my stomach was turning at the sight of so many people. All I could think about was that I was gonna mess up. To be honest, I didn’t have as much stage fright as I thought I would, but it was still nerve racking. As I get to the microphone at the middle of the stage I look around at everyone in the audience. I look up to see my face on a monitor. Everything felt so surreal… that feeling when you’re on stage is nothing I can describe. You feel like you’re walking on clouds.
“How is everyone tonight?” I say into the mic. Instantly everyone starts cheering. I didn’t get the same reaction One Direction would get, but people were genuinely excited.
“Before I begin let me just say, this is going to be one of the best nights of my life. I know for most of you guys it will be too. Opening for One Direction-“ As soon as I mention the boys, everyone screams. At the top of their lungs. It is so loud I have to stop speaking for a while.
“Wow you guys are dedicated.” I say and laugh, “I hope you guys enjoy tonight as much as I do.” I take the mic off of the pole and grab it. Instantly the song starts playing. Everyone is quieter. I guess they don’t know what to expect. As soon as I begin singing the lyrics, everyone cheers. I’m taking this as a good sign. The farther into the song I go, the louder people get. I do the little choreography Sydney planned out for me before the show. It’s really simple. I still feel the butterflies in my stomach but they start to fade. They’re replaced by adrenaline. I’m actually enjoying myself. When the song gets to a more upbeat chorus I walk up to the drummer and act flirty. That’s what Sydney told me to do. I just jump around the stage forgetting where I was. In my head, I was in my bedroom singing into my hair brush. As the first song ends I’m pumped. The crowd seems to too. I look over backstage and see Harry looking at me clapping. I smile at him and he winks at me. I turn back to the crowd and say thank you. I then begin the next song. The longer I go on stage the less I wanna leave. It feels right. By the time I finish the last song I’m smiling so wide. All the boys are standing backstage staring at me clapping and giving me thumbs up.
“Thank you so much again!! Who’s ready for One Direction?” I shout into my mic. Instantly everybody starts shouting, screaming, it is insane. I walk out and see the boys standing there waiting for me.
Almost instantly Harry grabs me and hugs me tightly. He lifts me up off the ground and spins me around.
I squeal “Ahh Harry put me down!”,
“You did amazing!” He says still holding me, then he puts me on the floor gently.
“Are you sure? I was so nervous!” I say my voice shaking.
“Nervous? You looked like you were born on that stage!” Louis says coming over to give me a hug.
“You literally wowed all of those fans , including us.” Zayn says walking over to us.
Liam and Niall follow him and we get into a group hug,
“You guys, thank you so much for your support. It means so much, and performing, that was surreal. I am still shaking.” I say looking down at my hands that are trembling.
“You were perfect.” Harry says once again before coming up to me and kissing my lips. As soon as I pull away from Harry someone runs up to me and hugs me,
“You were so gooood!!” It was Chloe, I recognized her voice. She backed away and I said thank you.
“Seriously, I had no idea you were that good. That was amazing,” She continues. I stand there blushing and then the boys are told to get ready, that they were up any minute. The video montage starts on the big screens on stage. It was prerecorded and everyone started screaming so much louder. The girls started chanting, “We want 1D! We want 1D!” the boys go get ready on stage and I wait by Chloe. As soon as the first boy appears on stage it gets SO LOUD. The girls are going crazy. I don’t blame them. They say a few words, about how they were glad I was opening for them, how excited they were for this tour, and how it’s gonna be a good start. With that they sing What Makes you Beautiful. And they sound perfect as always. Chloe and I are so focused on the performance we don’t talk. When they start singing the na-na-na part, all the boys start making their way to me except for Harry. He stays in the middle of the stage. As the boys get closer I get even more confused, why are they coming my way? With that they grab my hands and drag me on stage. What in the world? They walk me all the way towards Harry. That’s when I realize it was time for his solo. Harry grabs my hand and looks right into my eyes. The big screen on top of the stage goes to a close up of us. I hear some awe’s on the crowd.
“Baby you light up my world like nobody else, the way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed, and when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell, you don’t know-o-o, you don’t know youre beautiful.” His voice was deep and husky like. It gave me chills and goosebumps all over.
All I can do is stand there smiling in shock. When his solo is over they boys lead me to a couch which is a prop on stage and continue singing the song. When it’s over the crowd is cheering really hard. All the boys bow and Harry looks over at me, he mouths, “Were you expecting that?”
All I can do is shake my head. He’s never sung to me before. It felt…. Like I was the luckiest girl in the world.
He walks over to me and walks me backstage again. Before he goes back out to start the other song he kisses my cheek. The rest of the night goes by pretty quickly. Next thing I knew, the boys were saying goodnight. As the make their way backstage, I hear a girl yelling.
“No I know her! Just let me in!” I look behind me and see Jenny talking to the security guard.
“She’s with me Paul!” I say walking over to her.
“Oh sorry ma’am, you just never know.” He smiles at Jenny and she says back,
“No I understand! Thank you!” She looks back at me and gives me a huge hug.
“You literally left me speechless! And the boys were good too!” I smile at her and tell her thanks, I go over to introduce her to the boys.
“Guys, meet my friend Jenny. Jenny, meet guys.” I said signaling to them.
She’s just left awestruck.
“Hi, I’m Zayn. Nice to meet you.” Zayn extends his hands as if to shake it.
Jenny puts her hand in his and he kisses It instead. What was happening here?
“Nice to meet you too.” She says blushing.
“Woah Zayn, now with Harry in a steady relationship, you’re the cheeky one?” Louis says,
“Anything for a pretty girl.” He replies still looking at Jenny. I could see her cheeks were bright red and all I can do is look over at Harry in confusion.
He just shrugs. We spend a couple minutes talking about the show and how the tour’s gonna be. When we’re interrupted by Sydney,
“Guys, get back on the bus we’re driving to your hotel.” We all make our way and I hug Jenny goodbye,
“I’ll see you again!” I say to her before leaving. As soon as we’re on the bus we realize Zayn’s missing.
We look around for him until he boards the bus late.
“And you were…?” Liam asks.
“Doing things.” He says sitting down. I look over at him and scoff. I then look down at my phone and get a text from Jenny.
“You’ll never guess what just happened. –Jenny” it reads.
Somehow I think I can. I look over at Harry and smile. I move closer to him and cuddle up against his warm torso. It felt nice being drama free. Everything’s going right. I felt so happy at this moment… but I knew happiness didn’t last. And I knew whatever happens next will hit me hard. Somehow I wanted to freeze the picture right at this moment. But I knew I couldn’t. I knew something else was about to happen. And it probably won’t end well.
