The Wish

"I will not wish you glory, nor the radiant glow of greatness and prestige,

And I will not wish you riches,

Nor lasting treasure,

Nor a life of ease,

But that wherever you may go some weary heart shall gladden at your smile,

Or shadowed figure know sunshine for awhile,

Umbram fugat caritas, (charity puts the shadow to flight)

Noctem lux eliminat, (as light banishes darkness)

Lux tue splendeat, (may your light shine)

And when your heart is set aright,

Your path shall be a track of light,

Tread with gentle spirit bright like angels footsteps passing through the night,

I will not wish you cleverness,

Nor a brilliant mind and scholarly acclaim,

And I will not wish you beauty,

Nor dazzling fashion,

Nor a life of fame,

But that wherever you may go,

Some darkened soul shall brighten with your care,

Or saddened spirit find joy again to share."
