I understood the feeling after a few weeks or so of hanging out. She'd gone back to school, and would come back to my house, crying because of some girls who bullied her."Hey. Remember, only happy thoughts. Don't listen to them." She was snug against my chest, Dad had passed by the hallway and seen her sobbing, he smiled softly at me. I'd learned it from him, comforting people.
"Lily, I'm sorry I'm such a raging loser." She wiped her eyes.
"You're not–"
"I meant for crying, dingus." She laughed. "Like have you ever had a problem and come to me about it?" She was right. I did, but hid them from her.
Alex wouldn't want me to go into detail about how I was traumatized after a bad party, how I use to starve myself or any other terrible things. Besides, I was recovering from them.
"Anyways, I hate you. You're so perfect. Literally you look like the mean girls at my school, but prettier, and a million times nicer. It's like you've never hated anyone in your life. You probably don't even hate me." She joked.
"I love you Alex. And you're pretty too." I shrugged, accepting the compliment. Why be a pretty face with an ugly soul?
"Kid... " She groaned.
"I'm older than you, you can't call me kid."
"And I'm gay, you can't just stare into my eyes and call me pretty and caress my hair and say you love me." She accused as I laughed, then realized what she'd said.
"But I do love you."
"Did you hear anything that came from my mouth?" She laughed bitterly.
"Yeah, and just because you're gay means I'm supposed to hate you?"
"It means you're supposed to not love me?" She climbed from off of my lap. My face flushed.
"You're all, 'my name is Lily and I'm perfect, date jocks and have never seen a lesbian in my life'." She laughed at me. It wasn't true, hell LA was the gayest city ever.
I felt offended. "My ex wasn't a jock. And we dated more for reputation. I'm not perfect."
"Reputation, what you were so suspicious. Nobody would ever think you're gay." She pointed out with a roll of her eyes.
"I feel like that's stereotyping. And I didn't think you were?"
"You've probably had like more boyfriends then you can count."
"Why are you being so mean to me all of a sudden?" I felt crushed, and felt a tear threatening to escape my eye.
"Because you're the only one that's nice to me! And you don't just go around using the L word, like you're six. And I've never had a real friend like you." It was her turn to comfort me, I wiped my eyes and let my head fall in the crook of her neck.
"Lily... ?"
"Yeah?" I was too embarrassed, and cried into her hair. She got up for a second, closing my bedroom door softly.
My lip trembled, she wiped under my eyes with her thumb. "I want to kiss you. Can I?"
"Was that your move? Get me to cry and then kiss me better?" I rubbed my eyes sourly.
She shook her head. "I really like you Lily." I nodded timidly, closing my eyes.
It was different then my first kiss. She'd asked, he hadn't. She went slow, and it was almost like an apology, the way her lips moved against mine.
