That Stupid Song

Juliet made herself a hot chocolate, humming to the first ballad Dustin had ever made. It was her favorite song, the one song that changed everything for the band. It was full of hope, the emotion behind it made a lot of women swoon, including her. Juliet swirled some whipped cream on top of the sweet smelling hot liquid and carefully put a tall spoon in. As she observed her masterpiece she jumped when she heard someone clear their throat. She placed a hand against her sternum and tried to even her breathing while she looked up, watching as Dustin was having a blast. Laughing at her for nearly jumping out of her skin. His laughter, however, died when his eyes fixated upon the sparkling diamond ring around her finger. She dropped her hand, shifting her eyes away from him, afraid of what she'd see if she kept staring at him.

"Are you serious right now?"

She could hear the disbelief in his voice, along with something else. Something much darker. It didn't sound like confusion only, if anything she could have sworn he almost sounded angry.

"Do you want a cup as well?" She asked, trying to change the awkward subject.

He grabbed onto her hand when she started moving, he raised her hand slightly, letting the ring sparkle in the light.

"I want to know if this is for real."

She pulled her hand roughly away and took a step away from him, "It is." She answered in a small voice. There was no denying it, they both knew what that ring meant. She wasn't going to lie about it either, she'd only dig a deeper hole if she started leaving lies left and right.

"You know each other for five minutes, it's a joke, really."

She clenched her fists at her side, trying hard not to lash out at him. Zachary giving her that ring meant a lot to her, but she also knew that it would hurt Dustin. So she decided not to share their big news with anyone until Zachary made an official statement. She should have known better than to wear that ring. Reaching for it she slipped it off her finger and pocketed it.

"I'm sorry." She whispered.

"You shouldn't be here." He told her.

She frowned at hearing him say that, she was already feeling guilty for accepting a proposal which made her happy. Him saying that actually hurt.

"Excuse me?"

"You're a distraction."

She pressed her lips together, knowing he was getting angry at her because of the pain he was feeling. She had to take it all, but it took a lot of her to keep the tears at bay.

"I can't focus with you being here, especially when you flaunt things like that around!" He was getting more and more pissed with the second, "Don't you get how hard it is for me to see you with him?! It's because of you I feel the need to lose myself in other things."

She swallowed, the knot in her stomach tightening. It was hard to keep the tears at bay now. She couldn't even breathe anymore. She brushed the tears away that were streaming down her cheeks. A gasp leaving her lips when Dustin suddenly grabbed onto her wrists and tore her hands away from her face.

"You don't get to cry, not right now." He told her, his voice a lot more quiet and less frightening, "Not when I feel like someone just ripped my heart out of my chest."

"So you're the only one allowed to feel anything? Only your feelings matter?" She grabbed onto his biceps and tightly held on, "I'm sorry I fell in love with someone who made me feel like I'm everything to him. I'm sorry things between us didn't work out. I'll admit that there are some feelings, I won't be dishonest about that." She tightened her grip even more, "But you know, those feelings aren't the same as the feelings I have for Zachary. So I'm sorry."
