Eighteen Years Ago

Eliza's P.O.V

"James! James!" I ran through the halls of the house my father in law gave us as wedding present last year. The house was huge with more the ten rooms, from the outside it looked like an English castle. It sat in a field just between New York and New Jersey.

"Eliza? Is something wrong?" He turned the corner, looking at some book with his head down.

"James!" I continued running down the long hallway to my husband who finally looked up and smiled at me. Jumping into his arms he spun me around like we were in a romantic-comedy. "James," I whispered into his ear, "I'm pregnant." Grinning widely, I set my feet on the ground to get a look at his face. We've been trying to have a baby since six months after our marriage. Now it was finally happening and by the look on James' face he was ecstatic.

"Are you serious?" His happiness was literally radiating off of him.

"Get to the part where you got rid of our baby girl." James angrily snapped.

"I have to start from the beginning, James. Or you will never understand. Now, where was I? Awe yes."

"I just got the test results back. James, we are going to have a baby!" I wrapped my arms around him and we just stood there in each other's embrace.

"I love you so much, Eliza. Nothing will ever change that, ever." James squeezed me tight.

"I love you too, I always will, no matter what. The test says I'm already a month along, so my first ultra sound is going to be Thursday. You are coming, right?" I pulled back from him when he tensed up. "Right?"

"The thing is father has made me take chair on a really great fighter and I have to settle everything that day. I'm sorry Eliza." My face dropped and James looked regretfully at me. "Maybe father can go with you?"

"Um... yeah. Sure. I'll ask him." James kissed my forehead and let me go. He turned around and went back into his study.

"I still regret not going. If I could go back I would change it, you know?"  James interuped once more.

"But you can't. What's done is done. Now tell me finish without you interjecting.

"Eliza! I just want you to hurry up and tell everyone why you abandoned her," Alan yelled.

"Fine, alright. I'll get back to it. No more interruption..."

James' father, Mark, agreed to come with me, and so like any so to be mother, I started looking at baby things. Thursday came around and like every morning I kissed James goodbye and it was off to work. Mark came by and picked me up. Mark's wife died two years prior and so he was involved in James' life as much as possible, which included mine.

Mark and I sat in the waiting room for twenty minutes before he started a conversation. "Well what do you want to have? Baby wise, I mean."

"A girl would be nice, but I wouldn't mind a boy."

"Well, you know you have to have a boy first. That's just how it has to be. " He shrugged and sat straight on his chair like he didn't just deliver the most terrible news in the world. My side of the family is known for having girls and then boys, and also for twins.

"Well... what if it is twins? A lot of my family has twins the first time."

"Then you are going to have to make sure the first one to come out is a boy other wise you are going to have to give it away. Its that simple." Mark, once more, shrugged and turned, speaking no more to the mother of his grandson... or daughter.
