The ladder shook, and he was glad to finally stand on the solid roof. He looked down at Vivia, who was gesturing and moving her lips.
"What?" Spencer shouted.
"Hide!" She whispered.
"Where?"
She rolled her eyes as she got higher. Spencer sighed.
"Hide your head so they can't notice you!" She spoke once she was there.
Spencer bowed down, still watching her with the corner of his eye. She did the same, looking at the soldiers.
"What are we going to do?"
"Jump on roofs. Trust me, it will work."
He decided to question her no more. Instead, he also turned his eyes at the soldiers. They were standing patiently, not moving a muscle, so it seemed.
"Run!" He felt a shove in the back, and he struggled up awkwardly. His legs seemed to slide, and he was only brought back to the real world by Vivia pulling him to the other edge and throwing him down. He held on to the edge, kicking his legs.
Vivia grabbed him again and pulled him over a little further, so he was now holding on to the edge of the other roof.
"Yeah. You suck."
"What did you expect?" He asked as she pulled him up.
"Now you gotta be extra careful. I'm sure they noticed us."
He walked on and noticed that now, there were fewer soldiers, and a couple of them seemed to be distracted. They would exchange a word or two.
"Perfect," Vivia whispered. "Honestly, we're lucky."
Spencer nodded, still a little confused. Suddenly Vivia flew down from the roof.
He closed his eyes and followed, understanding that he could no longer hesitate. He lay on the soft, cold snow, trying to realize what he was doing. He couldn't move on anymore, but he didn't care. He just needed rest.
"Get up!" Vivia ordered. Scared, he lifted his head.
"I'm awful, aren't I?" He asked.
"Not the best, but you'll learn," Vivia answered. "We have a long way to go. Still got the device?"
He reached into his pocket, worry bubbling up and taking over every inch of his body. He felt the device, and the worry disappeared.
"Yes, luckily," he answered.
"Give it to me," Vivia reached out a hand and looked away impatiently. Spencer took the device out and put it on the palm.
