Chapter 12
The village is what some people would say is cozy and cute, with bright little huts and pebble streets, people are filing in and out all around the village like an ant hill, all busy with a purpose all glad to be squished into a tiny space at once. I am not a people person, I think any more than three people in a room is to crowded. Resulting from growing up in a huge secluded forest, I have grown used to taking comfort in silence and space. “Okay you can stay here or come but whatever you do, please don’t make this take any longer than it has to.” I plead to Muto. Since I was first abandoned the villagers here have been kind enough to give me my essential for free in exchange that I will warn them if any danger is coming. Our little deal has saved them plenty of times just like they have saved me from starvation. So taking a deep breath, I put on my best smile and casually walk in. Once I am inside the village everyone stops and rushes over to me, since I missed last week’s pick up, they obviously had been worried about me since they wouldn’t let me breath or talk from all the questions and hugs. Then someone finally notices Muto standing in the rare shadows in this bright sunny place. The women who found him points a finger and yells “There is the reason why she wasn’t here!” Everyone is silent for a moment and then starts chattering about my supposed boyfriend. The crowd pushes us together and starts asking us questions like how did we meet or have we kissed yet (this one really caught me off guard), “People please, we are not together! We just met in the woods a few days ago and I have been helping him out!” I yell. The crowd gets a sudden disappointed look after hearing this but before they could start pestering us one of the villager kids comes up and hands me a back pack with my weeks supply of food, clothing and other things, including Muto’s share of the supplies. The girl who brought it is small and delicate but agile. Her mousy brown hair is always getting in the way of her startling blue eyes. At five years old you can already tell that she will be the most beautiful girl in the village, but also the rarest since she is the only child with snow white skin. Everyone else has skin that is in between pale and tan (I call it sun kissed skin, since it looks like golden skin) from living right next to beach. “Thank you my little gem, you have just saved me from total embarrassment.” I whisper to her. Giggling, she says your welcome and then skips away to play with the other children. “Well we better get going, you all have a nice day and I will see you next week!” I exclaim to the village. Everyone groans while Muto and I sigh with relief as the crowd parts, letting us free of everyone’s attention. Running back to the forest, Muto laughs “looks like you’re not as secluded as I thought, if didn’t know any better I’d say you have a pretty big family”. Laughing as I role my eyes I tell him “Whatever, let’s just get home, I am not a people person.” With that I sling the back pack over my shoulder and start swinging from branch to branch home, as Muto follows close behind.
