~two days later~
"Hey Vicky?" I heard Susan say. I walked into the kitchen to see what she needed. She was almost frowning.
"What's up?" I asked skeptically.
"So Chris' birthday..."
"Yeah?"
"He's having some people over." She continued, still not finished.
"Like who?" I urged.
She stayed silent, probably hoping she could telepathically tell me and ultimately avoid conflict.
I sighed, "just say it."
"Eddie. And maybe the rest of Pearl Jam." She winced."That's okay. I'll keep Eleanor upstairs in our room. No biggie. I can avoid him." I smiled.
"You sure? I mean you me and Eleanor could just go out."
"No its fine. I wanna be here for Chris. How old is he gonna be again?" I asked, changing the subject."31." She said.
"Old man," I teased.----------------------------Day of the party-------
"Hey ladies, they're here." Chris told us. Susan looked at me sympathetically.
"El baby, lets go upstairs for a while." I told her, her big blue eyes stared at me as if her biological father wasn't about to walk through the door.
She grinned, and hugged Chris' leg. She always hugged him before going anywhere.
She took my hand and we went up the stairs."Okay, Aunt Susan is gonna bring Lily up here in a second and you two can play." I said, brushing her thick head of curls back.
I heard the door downstairs open and voices filled the room. Moments later, Susan came up with Lily, who ran to Eleanor.
"Anything you need? I can go down and grab something." Susan said, sitting beside me.
"Nope, I'm all good." I smiled.
We watched the girls play for a few minutes."What's it like?" Susan said suddenly.
"What's what like?"
"You know, having Eddie's kid and not telling him. How do you hold back on telling him?" She asked.
"I don't know. I think it's just better left unsaid." I answered truthfully.
"If he were to find out, would you let him back into your life?"
"I think the better question is would he want to." I stated.
She laughed lightly. There was a knock on the door, and Then it opened.
"Hey girls." Chris said, peeking his head in.
"Daddy!" Lily shouted, running to him.
"Hey lil. Want some cake?" He asked her.
She nodded happily.
"Okay. You girls need anything?" He asked us.
"Nope." I answered.
"Can Eleanor come down and get some cake?" Chris asked.
"Yeah." I nodded.
"I'll just tell them it's a friends kid that I'm watching." He told me.
"Thanks Chris. Go with him El." I said.
Eleanor joined Lily beside Chris and he led them out.
"She's adorable." Susan told me.
"Looks just like him. Thankfully." I said, shaking my head."Oh don't be like that Vicky, you're beautiful and you know it!" Susan exclaimed.
"Well now what?" She said.
"I dunno," I said, looking around the room.
"I think the guys went outside, if you want to come downstairs."I nodded and we both went downstairs, to our luck nobody was there. We sat down and watched TV in comfortable silence.
The back door opened and I flinched, but calmed down seeing it was just Eleanor.
"You ready for bed El?"
She nodded and yawned, walking to me.
I picked her up and carried her upstairs to the bed."Momma who's that?"
I cringed, afraid to look behind me.
I pulled the covers up to her chest and turned around.
My heart dropped. Are you kidding me.
"Momma..." Eleanor said once more.
"Hey Chris?" I said, hoping he could hear it.I just stared at him. Eyes fixated on me. He was so obviously drunk, and frankly I didn't want a drunk anywhere near Eleanor right now.
"Who are you?" He asked.
"Eddie, you need to go." I said firmly but in a calm tone to not worry El.
"Oh cmon I just asked a qu-"
"Eddie go."
