In life, I always used to wonder why some people were different, and why they didn't share the same values as me. When I was fourteen, I figured it out; upbringing. However you are brought up does everything for you– how you hold yourself, how you treat others and how you react in certain situations. Your character basically boils down to what you were taught when you were a child, for example what was wrong and what was right.
In the short week of knowing Kenzie, I've noticed she's shy, and passive, but somehow outgoing and alive. It's strange; her personality is strange. Gunning up the courage, I pad barefoot into Lauren's room. She's seated at her desk, and when I make my entrance known by sitting on her bed she spins around on her chair.
"Hey." I say, lying down on my back.
"Hey." She replies happily enough. Although we're siblings, and of course we fight sometimes conversations like these are frequent– she comes to me if she has a problem and vice versa.
"I just wanted to ask..." I begin, unsure how to start the sentence.
"About?" She questions.
"Well, I was wondering... how come I've never seen Mackenzie come over to ours? If you've known her for twelve years and everything."
"Well," Lauren starts, "she's never really been over to our house."
"Why?" I ask curiously.
"Her parents aren't exactly... there." She says hesitantly. "If you know what I mean."
I sit up, crinkling my eyebrows. "You mean they're crazy?"
"No, I literally mean what I said. They're workaholics honestly; it's just always been me going over to her house because she gets lonely."
"Oh." I sigh. "That explains why she's always on her phone then."
"Yeah, you get it." She says, a coy smile staring to twist the corners of her mouth up. "Why do you ask?"
"No reason." I say nonchalantly.
"You like her, don't you." She figures out, voice teasing now.
A blush probably scatters my cheeks.
"It's ok if you like her you know? You're a good guy, and I think she likes you too."
"Thanks for you blessing then Laur." I scoff.
"You didn't answer the question." She deadpans.
"Fine." I sigh. "I like her."
"You beauty Johnny Orlando!" She says loudly, picking up her phone.
"Excuse me?"
"Brynn and I bet on how long it would take you to realise. I said a week, and she said a month. I'm closer, meaning she owes me a meal at Oxfords!" She squeals, laughing, and grabs her phone.
"You're so fucking cliché it's not even funny." I growl, standing up.
"Goodbye!" She cackles as I walk out her open doorway.
