Cold air seems to seep through my black snow jacket as Lauren and I sit on the stands at Johnny's football game. A red beanie is perched on my head, taming my flyaway locks.
"Go!" Lauren laughs. "Go talk to him!"
"No it's okay Laur, I'm fine!" I dismiss, leaning my elbows onto the wooden bench in front.
"Hey- he was the one that invited you. Just go up to him!"
"He's probably like getting ready or something, I don't need to interrupt." I reason nervously.
She sighs profusely, but smiles all the same. "You're a silly duffer. At least wave!"
He picks this exact moment to look over, eyes seemingly searching the bleachers.
"He's looking for you! Wave!" Lauren hisses again. Shyly, I wave, catching his attention and tucking my wayward hair behind my ear.
My heart almost stops when he rewards me with a boyish grin and a wave back, obviously pleased that I came.
"Okay, that was cute." Lauren grins. "Your flirting skills are definetly up to par."
"My skills?" I shriek, laughing.
"The cute little wave, smile, and hair tuck. Definitely cute." She teases.
I only roll my eyes at her teasing, turning back to the field. It looks like the games starting, and the loud whistle of the referee only confirms my theory.
Throughout the game, and I don't know much about football, I can already tell why Johnny has girls swooning over him. He's ridiculously talented; he outruns all of the opposing teams defence time and time again- never seeming to get tired. He's obviously the favourite on his team too, as some stupid little year nines are chanting his name at the bottom of the stands. I feel like throwing my umbrella at them.
Before I know it, the games over and Lauren and I make our way to the bottom of the stands. Johnny's team won of course, and I see a few girlfriends of the team run out and congratulate their boys. When we get onto the field, Lauren gives me a questioning look as if to say are you going to him or not?
Laughing quietly, I look for Johnny. He sees me, and an amused grin breaks out on his face before he opens his arms out wide. I jog over to him, really running the last few strides and catapulting into his open arms. He chuckles deeply, wrapping his arms around my waist and spinning me a little. I grin while breathing in his scent softly, and damn does he smell good even after a long football game.
"Hey." He smiles deeply, pulling me so that he can view my face.
"Hi." I reply, almost breathlessly.
We stayed fixated among each others gaze, smiling and breathing heavily. I'm almost positive that we would have kissed if Lauren didn't interrupt.
"Well well well, our star footballer." She drawls cheekily, clearly knowing what she interrupted. A light blush scatters along my cheeks, and a little of the light that was in my eyes probably fades.
The grin stays evident on Johnny's face though, changing a little to suit the situation. With me now pressed against his side, he looks like the cat that got the cream.
"Lauren, the family clutz." He addresses jokingly, sarcastically. "Welcome!"
We begin walking back to the bright lights of the stands slowly, and I notice with satisfaction that Johnny's little fan club is gone.
"Don't you need to hit the showers?" Lauren asks, wrinkling her nose.
"Oh shut up." Is his only response. "If I go get changed, do you guys want to meet up at Oxfords for a hot chocolate?"
He smiles, looking down at me.
"I'd love to." I answer, looking to Lauren.
"I'd rather not." She says, wrinkling her nose. "That would be third wheeling at it's finest."
"How will you get home?" I ask, because Lauren and I came in my car.
"I'll take you home in your car Kenz, and Lauren can take mine." Johnny shrugs.
"What about you?" I ask again, eyes alight.
"I'll walk." He concludes simply, and Lauren nods, agreeing. I try to disagree, because it's far too cold to walk– but they won't listen; forever a team.
Not long after, Lauren heads off to Johnny's car and I wait on the bleachers while Johnny gets changed. He tried to make me wait in my car, but I'm stubborn and wouldn't have that.
"You ready?" I hear Johnny's voice call out. I look up, smiling already, nodding. He's gotten changed into black jeans and a tight grey top; emphasising how well built he is. My eyes flit down his body in approval, and as he swallows I know that he noticed me checking him out.
"Yeah, lets go." I smile, leading the way to my car. I give him a few moments to check out the tight black jeans I'm wearing, with my adidas superstars and jewellery to match. When I look back, he's grinning, a gesture that makes my thought train wander. Flirting is really fun when you find the right person.
I insist on driving my own car, because although he's a confident driver I don't let anyone apart from myself drive her. Yes, she has a name, and when I told Johnny this he only rolled his eyes.
Conversation is easy around him, and we joked like old friends all the way to the cafe. He seemed impressed with the things I've done for music in our small town, and made me promise we'd sing together in the future. I mean– has heard himself sing? I can't compete with that!
The little bell on the door dings as we walk hand in hand into the little cafe. The lights are are a bright yellow colour, casting a warm glow on everything, and the heaters radiate warmth. I sigh in content, breathing in the smell of cafe and roaming my eyes for a spare seat.
"Over there?" Johnny says, pointing to a secluded love seat in the back.
"Perfect." I smile.
