This was it. Bud's first day of Kindergarten. Both Rachel and Finn had dreaded and looked forward to this day for so long. And now that it was here, Rachel couldn't stop crying. "Hey Bud, are you excited?" Finn asked at breakfast.
"So excited!! I get to go to school!" He replied cheerfully, stuffing his waffle in his face as he hurried to brush his teeth. Finn laughed, "He's so eager. That's a good sign." He noticed Rachel's distraught face. "It is, Rach. He'll have a good day."
Rachel looked up. "But what if he doesn't? How do I explain to him that he has to go back for the next 12 years? What if he hates us for making him go? What if he doesn't make any friends? What if..." Finn stopped her with a kiss.
"Rach. It'll be okay. He's a strong boy, and knowing him, he won't have any problem making friends. He's so excited, Rachel. Let's give him that. Let him be excited. Try to be happy for him, he's been looking forward to this all summer. He'll be fine."
Rachel nodded, just as Bud came rushing down the stairs. "I'm ready!" Rachel couldn't help but laugh at her son, looking all cute and eager in his tiny uniform. She handed him his lunchbox and then they were on their way to drop him off.
"Aright," Finn said, pulling to a stop, "everybody out!"
The three made their way into the school, and introduced Bud to his new teacher, who seemed as nice as can be. When it came time for Finn and Rachel to leave, Bud was so eager to start playing he almost forgot to say goodbye. But he ran up to Rachel, and then Finn, with a huge smile on his face. "I love you!!" He said, and ran off.
"I love you too, little man." Rachel said, loud enough that he could hear her. He looked back and smiled, and turned around to play with blocks.
Once Finn and Rachel got outside again, Rachel started to cry. "I miss him already, Finn." She said, burying her head in his chest.
"Me too." His voice sounded strained. "I didn't know I would feel like this. I thought I'd be fine." He took a deep breath. "But, he's gonna have a good day. I can already tell."
"I think you're right. Come on, Finn." She sniffed and wiped away her tears. "Let's go home."
