NINETEEN:
"OW!" I shouted. I hate crutches! How am I supposed to walk across the icy sidewalk on them!
"Sera! Are you okay?" Jason asked, helping me up. He just drove me home from our trip in the mountains.
"No, my butt hurts from falling and my arms hurt from these stupid crutches. This sucks" I complained.
"Sorry to hear that babe, but you'll only need them for a few weeks," he said while he walked with me to my front door.
I sighed, "I know, I'm sorry for complaining to you. I'm just not looking forward to going inside my house right now."
He nodded, "I understand." He walked back to pick up my crutches and handed them to me. I took them from him and walked in after he opened the door for me.
"Thanks," I said before leaning forward to kiss him.
"Ah, Jason, you're here," my mom said rudely. I glared at her.
"In case you haven't noticed Mom, I'm on crutches. He was helping me."
She shot me a dirty look, "Well at least you weren't giving the neighbors another show outside."
I stared at her, my mouth open and speechless. Jason looked at me confused. Luckily my father walked in before I could yell at my mother.
"Sera, how are you baby? Shouldn't you be sitting down with that broken ankle of yours? C'mon, let's go in the living room. You too Jason, relax for a while," he grinned.
"Thanks Dad. It's nice to see one of my parents care about my well-being," I said. I followed him in the living room and Jason walked right next to me, probably so he could catch me if I fell again. I sat on the couch next to him, my dad sat in the recliner across from us, and my mother sat in the chair next to him.
"So what exactly happened?" my dad asked. I smiled at him happily because I noticed he was treating me better. Usually he's quieter around my mom, but lately he's actually been spending time with me and conversing a lot more. I think I got through to him when I told him we haven't been acting like a family. My mom is another story though. I think she's permanently disappointed in me. I have no idea what I ever did wrong in the past, but I don't even care anymore.
"Well, we were snowboarding and I had to dodge a few people, I think. I don't really remember anything after that."
"Who found you?"
"Jason found me," I said, smiling at my boyfriend.
"You did?" my dad said to him.
Jason nodded. "Yes sir. When I realized she wasn't next to me, I turned around and looked for her in the crowd. When I heard someone calling for help from the woods, I knew it was her. I ran straight there and found her lying in the snow. So I called for help and they took her in the ambulance. I was so worried," he explained, shaking his head and taking my hand when he finished.
"Well thank you Jason. I knew I could trust you with my daughter," my dad said.
"What are you talking about Kent? She had a concussion! If he stayed with her then she wouldn't have gotten hurt!" my mother exclaimed angrily.
"How can you even say that? It was an accident! It wasn't Jason's fault," I snapped, barely keeping my voice at an 'indoor level'.
Jason squeezed my hand, "Sera, she's right, I should've stayed right next to you-"
"No, it's not your fault. It was an accident. You know how clumsy I am," I cut him off, glaring at my mother, "and even if it was Jason's fault, he at least stayed with me the whole time I was in the hospital. You didn't even call me, let alone think about visiting me." When I finished, I felt tears forming behind my eyes, but I refused to let them fall now. I needed to seem angry at my parents (well, my mom), not sad.
