I stared at the mouth of the beast and let out a shriek.

It ignored me and turned to Phil, and I heard slurping noises. Was it eating him?

I grabbed a branch on the ground next to me and brought it down on the animal as hard as I could.

I heard a yelp, and felt a jolt of satisfaction.

"Quit it!" someone yelled. "You're hurting my dog."

I dropped my branch in surprise to stare at the newcomers.

I assessed their appearances and immediately gave them nicknames.

Sunny for the blonde, and Emo for the guy in black.

They looked about in their twenties.

Emo whistled, and the dog bounded to his side. He smiled as he pet it's chin.

"Uh, hi," Phil said. "I'm Phil."

I elbowed him. "Shut up. They might be unfriendly."

Phil looked confused for a moment, then put the cutest scowl ever on his face.

"I mean, who are you two?"

I stared at his face for a moment. Cute.

"I'm Will and this is Nico," Sunny said, gesturing to Emo. "Nice to meet you Phil and..."

I stayed silent, looking back at them, my face turning red as I realized they had seen me staring at Phil.

Sunny giggled. "Aww Nico look, they're like mini-us."

Emo smiled. "They kind of are."

I felt my face heat up again.

Suddenly a bone-chilling howl drifted through the trees.

Sunny's face turned to one of worry. "No time to chat!"

He ran over to Phil and grabbed his wrist, pulling him towards the beast.

Fear stuck me. "Phil!" I yelled, running over and grabbing his other arm.

We both pulled for a minute before Emo grabbed me from behind. What a **** move.

I squirmed in his arms, but he pushed me onto the dog behind Sunny, then climbed up behind me, effectively pinning me between them.

Sunny whispered something to Phil. Emo whispered something I didn't understand. A different language maybe?

The dog's ears perked up, and it ran forward, into a shadow.

I closed my eyes and shivered for a minute, then opened them again when I heard a crash of something breaking.

We we standing in front of a porch overhang, with a broken table and a scattered set of cards at our feet.

"Well," someone drawled. "Welcome to camp Half-blood I suppose."
