Dan caught up with me just before I reached Will.

I had apologized for attacking his boyfriend with a cactus, and he had apologized for kidnapping us. So we were all good now.

Will had told me earlier to meet him here for training. He hadn't told me what kind.

"Hey," Will said casually, leaning against a tree.

I nodded at him and flashed a grin. "Hi Will. So what are we doing?"

"We're going to try to narrow down who your godly parent is."

I smiled. "Sounds fun! How?"

"We're going to give you a series of tests. Do them the best you can."

I nodded.

"We're going to test archery first." He pushed a bow and a few arrows into my hands, then pointed to a few targets. "Try and shoot those."

With Will's help, I threaded the arrow onto the string, the lined it up properly and pulled back as hard as I could. My arms shook. I couldn't hold it for long, so I aimed best as I could and let go.

It missed by a few yards.

Will smiled. "If you were a child of Apollo it would have come naturally. So I think it's safe to say you're not."

He handed the bow to Dan. "Since you're here, I might as well test you too."

Dan also was only able to hold the bow for a few seconds. His arms were shaking back and forth, but he finally shot. He hit the target at least, but not by much.

Will nodded. "Not bad for a first shot. Come on, let's go to the next test."

He led us a ways before stopping on the dock over the lake. I stared into the murky depths.

"What are we doing here?"

Will didn't respond. Instead, he grabbed me under the arms, picked me up, and threw me into the lake.

I would have gasped at the cold, but I was underwater.

I tried to swim to the surface, but my sneakers weren't very good flippers, and I was too cold to move very fast.

I thrashed around in the water until my face was turning blue.

Then suddenly, I could breathe.

I looked around me in shock. A green fish swam up to me and looked me in the eyes.

Then I turned to my other side and was met with a different green.

A boy was swimming next to me. He had black hair and sea green eyes. He waved at me. In shock, I waved back.

Was it true? Could I be a son of Poseidon?

Then I realized there was a bubble around my head.

"That's my doing," the boy said. Underwater, his voice sounded muffled, as if he were talking though a pillow.

Plants tickled my legs. A long gray eel-like creature curled around the boy's ankle affectionately, then swam away.

"Oh." My voice sounded perfectly clear. I suppose that's because I was in my own bubble.

The boy grinned at me. "Want out?"

I looked around me one more time, then nodded.

The pressure built around me suddenly, then I shot from the water.

I landed in a heap in the grass. Dan and Will were still on the dock.

"So not a son of Poseidon," Will mused. "Next!" He promptly threw Dan in too.

"Who was that?" I spluttered, standing up and shivering.

"Oh, that was Percy," Will said, watching the water where Dan had disappeared.

I shivered again. My teeth began to chatter.

"I'm so cold!"

Will looked away from the water at me, as if just realizing that I was freezing.

"Oh." He put his fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly.

Two girls ran up with what looked like a giant bronze hair dryer.

One of them immediately struck me as wild. Her wavy shoulder length hair was a bright rainbow color. The other was slightly less interesting, and a lot shorter. She had pixie cut blonde hair and bright green eyes. She appeared to be struggling under the weight of the hairdryer, but both of them were grinning.

They aimed the hairdryer at me and pressed a button, and I fell back onto my butt onto the grass with the force of the hot air that shot out of it. But I was warm and dry in seconds.

The two dropped the hairdryer, almost on the taller girl's toes, and the short one held out her hand. "Hi!" She exclaimed in a perky voice. "I'm Millie." Tentatively, I shook her hand.

The other one simply waved awkwardly at me. "Hey. I'm Ashh."

Ashh looked like she was about to say something else, but just then Dan flew out of the water next to me.

The girls picked up the hairdryer again and blew it at Dan.

Dan coughed. "That is some hair."

Ashh grinned and touched her hair. "Thanks. I dye it every month."

The short one seemed to not be able to sit still. She tapped her foot.

"Hi. I'm Millie. I already explained to him. You didn't give us your name by the way."

"I'm Phil," I said, smiling and standing again. "And this is Dan."

"Salutations."

"Hate to break up a budding friendship," Will broke in. "But we're training."

The girls nodded and left, taking their hairdryer with them.

What an odd pair.
