I'm so so so sorry for lack of updates!

Lucinda's POV

*Play Song*

Why...

Its a question that even us doctors—who are supposed to be quite well-versed in death—ask ourselves.

Actually, its something we ask ourselves more often than not.

Why?

Why...do people have to die?

And no matter what we do, as doctors, as healers.

We can't save them.

And sadly...

Everyone...inevitably will die.

And we can't do anything about that...

It's the circle of life.

But I ask of the gods or whoever is controlling this shindig...

Why...

Why do people have to die...so young?

Today is the day Aphmau and Aaron get back from their honeymoon...

And I keep dreading the moment where I have to tell two newlyweds that their only child left is dying.

That their two-year-old baby girl is fading away.

Angel had a check-up just before the wedding.

And I had noticed—

You know what?

I'll just tell them.

They need to know.

Unfortunately, I spot Aaron from down the hall.

He was alone, reading a patient's chart.

Here goes.

"Aaron!" I call to him, slightly jogging towards him.

He raises his gaze to me, smiling.

No.

Please don't smile.

"Hey Lucinda, how you've been?" He asks politely, still smiling.

Oh, Irene.

I don't think I can do this...

"G-good." I manage.

I lie...

I haven't been good.

It would a crime to be good right now.

"Good, well, my apologies, but I got to round on my patients so—"

"Aaron."

His smile falters. "What's wrong?"

I clear my throat, and then it hits me—now of all times—like a tidal wave as tears stream down the contours of my face.

"Hey—hey, Lucinda...its okay." He says assuringly.

"No...no it's not okay."

"Why?"

"Cause...gods—cause Angel isn't okay."

Then I start to tell him.

Describing her diagnosis...

Seeing how his happiness flakes away slowly and then...

All at once...

Third Person's View

Aaron enters the vicinity of the kitchen, finding Aphmau hunched over the sink, scrubbing away at clusters of dishes.

Aaron gulps, biting his lip as he sighs.

I can't do this. he told himself.

I can't tell her.

You know what life, gods, whoever...

REALLY BAD WORD

You can go fuck yourself.

"Hey, Aph?" Aaron shuffles solemnly over to her.

She whips around to face him, the tone of his voice all too familiar.

And things get even worse as she sees the look on his face.

While still looking at him, she blindly turns off the sink, turning her full attention to him, clearing her throat.

"...who died?"

Aaron doesn't say anything, he just grimaces, trying to stop himself from feeling the sad emotion he was all too desperate to feel.

"Aaron....look at me." She commands, her voice breaking yet stern, her eyes watering yet blazing.

Aaron obliges, meeting her gaze, breathing heavily, shaking his head at his vain attempt at avoiding telling her.

Telling her news...that will cause such detriment to her rare recent joy.

Why, Irene.

"I love you—so much....but I know that look." She gulps. "So, you better tell me...right here and now...who died?"

And for the first time in a long time, Aaron breaks down, leaning against the counter, sobbing softly, still shaking his head.

Aphmau comes over to him, massaging his nearest shoulder, turning him to her, scared as hell.

Well, she has every right...

"...Aaron?"

".....No one's dead."

"Oh, thank Irene—"

"But someone is dying"

"W-what? Who?" Aphmau asks, now the same as she was a few seconds ago.

".......Angel."

Then's its Aphmau's turn to break down.

"No. no. no—" Every "no" she said, became more and more hoarse as she slides down the kitchen wall, her sobs becoming louder as she descended.

Aaron continues, still standing, one hand supporting him, as he as well, cried......

"She has—dilated cardiomyopathy. Which, as you know...is genetic."

Aphmau just sobs louder, hugging herself, every fiber of her being burning with pain and self-hatred.

It's their fault?

"Lucinda said she will try her best, but worst case scenario...she'll need to do a heart transplant."

Aphmau chokes, her whole body jolting at her loud sobs.

Aaron finally comes and joining her on the floor, putting her in his arms once again, both sobbing once again...
