~A few months later~

"You sure you'll be okay?" Aaron raises a singular eyebrow in that cute way he did that made him look like a puppy.

I smile sheepishly, rubbing my forearm.

"If I got a dollar everytime someone asked me that....." I remark, scoffing, feeling slight pain in my jaw.

It hurts to smile.....

Physically....

And emotionally......

How many people can say that?

It's been a few months since I was discharged from the hospital....

And I have been stuck in this house a bit more then I have to....

Can you guess why?

"No but seriously, can you hear me clearly? Does your arm feel okay? Any soreness in your jaw....." He starts, but I stop him, placing a hand on his cheek.

"Aaron......I'm fine.....I've been fine for awhile now....and you can't just keep me in this house so I don't get hurt again......"

Aaron drops his head, giving in, smiling, raising his head again, to brush a lone strand of hair dangling in front of my face.

"I just want to keep promises....I know I can never keep....." Aaron sighs, his gaze not leaving mine.

"Yeah...it's a cruel world....thought we established that by now?"

We both chuckle, then lean in slowly, but we are interrupted by a cute call coming from before us.

"Dada? Mama?" Angel calls, waddling into our sight, a large picture frame in her grasp.

"Yes sweetie? What is it?" I address, squatting down to her level, smiling at her cute features, how her dark hair was pulled up in a messy bun, her miniature nose implanted in the middle of her face, her eyes an uncanny resemblance to her father's.

"Who dis?" She asks in her cute toddler voice, all high pitched and innocent.

She holds up the picture frame and I take it into hand, smiling.

But when I saw what was in the picture......

My smile....

Disappeared......

I was frozen in place, unable to speak or move.

I felt like I would never move again.....

Then.....somehow.....I did....

I stand up slowly, shuffling slowly over to Aaron, my expression blank, raising the picture frame, so he could see.

He looks at the photo, his face showing slight pain, then he looked back to me, his face now blank.

I then retract the photo, skimming the dusty glass in my hands, then a clink of a tear makes its way through the dust as it fell from my cheek.

Aaron instantly pulls me into his embrace, breathing into my hair, as I hug the frame to my chest.

"Swo......who is dis?" Angel inquires, pulling at my jeans, seeing my tears.

I look down to her, smiling, then to Aaron, releasing from his hug, kneeling down to Angel, holding it up so now, she could observe it.

"That's your sister......Lilith..."

"Hey Aphmau, its great to have you back...." Zane says gratefully.

I give him a thankful smile and nod, tying my hair into a ponytail as I walked beside him to the ER.

"It is great to be back...." I state, sighing, taking in the aura of the hospital.

And though.....there is..death...

There is also life...

"Hey, Aphmau! It's great to see you well again...." Ivy smiles, handing me my tablet.

"Thanks, Ivy...."

Then I turn back to Katelyn.

"Okay let me get this straight, Zane approved the adult-to-child transplant and you are leading a clinical trial?" I ask in awe, smiling.

"Yeah but.....I just operated on my first patient of the clinical trial and she......didn't make it..." Katelyn sighs, walking alongside me through the ER.

"Oh Katelyn...I'm so sorry..." I rub her arm assuringly, she just smiling at me.

"Thanks but......its fine.....I will get this to work.....and so.....lives will have to be lost in order for many to be saved...." She waves me off to my patients.

I waltz over to one of the ER beds where one of my assigned patients were.

I pull back the curtain.......

And I nearly drop the tablet, it fumbling in my clumsy arms....

My mouth is ajar in shock, my eyes widened and strained, my heart immobilized.

The patient smiles, looking at me with kind eyes. 

"Hello Dr. Phoenix......long time....no see..."

"Mr. Garnet......."
