The walls were breached when the sun had already gone down. Completely unexpected, the lights were out and everybody had been wrapped in their own tangle of clean sheets.
We had known it was coming. They had all gathered in a clearing only a few miles south, only kept together by rusty semi's that were falling apart with every second that ticked by. A time bomb waiting to explode was the best way to explain it. We had prepared and stocked up on weapons and food for when the time came, but nobody expected it to be so early.
The creaking of the walls as they were leaned against by thousands of bodies came first, followed by an exaggerated moan as they fell to the ground. All connected, the walls that hadn't fallen were bent and threatening with the fear that they all could fail. The crash itself was what woke me up. It rattled the ground and sent a wave of shock through everyone. Next were the gunshots rapidly firing from various rifles and hand guns. The few people on watch emptying ammo like it was unlimited.
"Carl, get up," my dad shook me awake by my shoulders. His eyes were wide in realization that this was happening far too early.
"Now!" He yelled into my face when I hadn't moved. My legs still weak from sleep and eyes just as weary.
My bare legs swung over the side of the bed and I rushed to grab a pair of dirty jeans laying in a pile of clothes before I left my room and ran downstairs.
Downstairs was where she slept. The girl who had been with us since the prison and just so happened to gain so much of my trust that I loved her. Rounding the corner, my breath caught in my throat as the couch was unoccupied. An old wool blanket draped lazily over the armrest was the only sign that she had gotten up.
"Holy shit- Michonne!"
As on command she ran down the stairs with dad right on her heels. They caught on Michonne almost lost her balance if it weren't for dad's hands holding her up.
"The back door was open," she spoke with worry. "Do you know when she left?"
I shook my head and threw myself down onto the couch. My fingers weaved themselves into my hair and pulled in worry. There was no telling how long or where she had gone. No telling if she was inside or outside the walls.
Dad walked to a window, pulling back the blinds to peer outside at the growing mess of walkers. "They're coming."
I jumped up, unlocking the front door and holding it open as a wave of people rushed in carrying full backpacks and different weapons.
Glenn, Maggie, Carol, Daryl, Sasha, Morgan, Abraham... more rushed in and my face fell when she didn't show up.
They all hurriedly placed down their things and situated their weapons to their belts. All talking of different things and theories of how this could've happened while I began to feel dizzy and had to lean against the wall for support.
"Carl," Maggie spoke. The crowd hushed and they turned to my sickly looking self. "Where is (y/n)?"
I shrugged and she took in a deep breath, understanding how big of a deal this was.
