~Chapter 13~
~Lyra's POV~
I was freaking out. Honestly and seriously, yes, freaking out.
Who wouldn't be?
You would be too, if you had to go sing in front of loads of people on your own!
I mean, it’s not like I’ve not done this sort of thing before… it’s just that this time my performances are going to determine whether I get a scholarship – and that means if I fail, I won’t be able to help Scarlette.
Melody had done great.
I didn’t just think that did I… yes, yes I did. I may not like the girl all that much but you got to hand it to her – she is a pretty good performer.
Don't tell her I said that though, she'd probably think I was softening up or something.
''Lyra! Are you ready?'' someone whispered by my ear.
''Errr, how about no?!”
Then I realised who it was.
“Sinjin. You have three seconds to run.” I glared at him. “Three.”
The kid ran for his life, as I stood there smirking.
“Lyra, you’re on,” someone told me – I wasn’t paying attention as to whom it was. “Go!”
There were a few cheers for me as I walked on stage, and I smiled. They're probably my friends cheering for me: Harley, CeCe, Alex, James, Marcus – heck even Tyler! – and… Melody. I saw her waving at me from the crowd. I looked to the front row and saw the principle, Sikowitz and Anthony all sat there – ready to decide my fate.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and grabbed hold of my microphone. In that moment all my nerves had disappeared, somehow.
I played introduction on my guitar and started singing:
“I'm losing myself
Tryin’ to compete
With everyone else
Instead of just being me
Don't know where to turn
I've been stuck in this routine
I need to change my ways
Instead of always being weak
I don't wanna be afraid
I wanna wake up feeling beautiful today
And know that I'm okay
‘Cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways
You see, I just wanna believe in me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
The mirror can lie
Doesn't show you what's inside
And it, it can tell you you’re full of life
It's amazing what you can hide
