"You may enter." A new guard wolf nods at me, his posture picture perfect and intimidating.

Instead of walking into the office, I pause to converse with the guard I haven't seen around before.

"Are you new here?" I cock my head to the side, placing my hand on his shoulder. He looks at my hand on his shoulder, trying to maintain a cool composure. Unfortunately for him, his eyes betrayed him. They looked from my hand to my eyes quickly as if he was contemplating flipping me over or not. I felt tension rise. I almost laugh at it.

"Relax. If you keep this job, you'll be seeing me popping by often." I patted him on the shoulder twice before walking past him. I felt him visibly relax at the corner of my eye. I turned my head around slightly as i'm beside him and notice he was looking and me, eye to eye. I winked. "And if you think someone is a threat, take them down first, ask questions later. Don't hesistate. They wouldn't before killing you."

He tenses up again.

"I'm Julius, by the way, it was nice meeting you." I waved as I pushed open the door office.

As I close the door, the atmosphere immediately shifts. One from the cold, hard, professional walls of the headquarters to the warm tones of it's highest ranking office. It's apparent that Chief spends most of the time here. The smell of the room is almost like the outside world, where wolves used to run free.

Visiting this place was second best to doing my job of actually running free. Running free from a lot of things actually. Hunters. Animals.

Unfortunately being free isn't something that most werewolves have nowadays. It is quite taxing for a were to not shift and be free after awhile, but that's the reality we live in.

"Julius." I was greeted.

"Chief." I greet back, warmly.

"Julius, how many times have I told you to use my real name." Chief huffs at my addressing.

I smile at that.

"Can't do, Chief." I sat down at my usual spot, crossing my arms. Imade myself comfortable. I ask teasingly, "What if the rest find out that you're biased towards me?"

"Everyone knows that by now." Chief waves a hand dismissively. "You're like a son to me."

"An Alpha Chief adopting an ex-rogue. How beautiful." I sigh at the ironic beauty of it.

I feel like the reality we are living in is so twisted and preverse now that it allows for something normally seen to be wrong and unnatural to be suddenly accepted like it's nothing. I smile ever wider at that.

"Did the older wolves get at you again?" Chief sighs.

Chief knows the criticism that I endure when I face older, traditional wolves. Me getting found by the chief just after the attacks happened put me in this path.

If I thought too long about it, my brain would go to other possible realities I could be facing now if not for Chief. I shudder at the thought.

"It's nothing," I change the topic. It isn't worth my time for now. "You know what i'm here for."

"Ahh, the mission." Chief prompts. "How did it go?"

"When I got to the area you mentioned, a witch was indeed  there."

Chief's face changes a little when I confirmed suspicions.

"Any useful information?"

I slide the file I had obtained. "He said we can only go in a month prior to her birthday."

"That's all. He didn't say why?" Chief waits for any other information I have to spill. I couldn't think of anything else.

I nod.

Chief sighs out disappointedly, before muttering something too soft for me to hear.

I cleared my throat.

"Strangely, he made it seem very important. As if he cares about the girl."

Chief's eyebrows raised, taking note of that. "What did you give him in exhange, by the way?"

"Nothing. Absolutely nothing."

Which was weird, because witches always ask for something. Speaking from experience. A vial of my blood, a toenail of an enemy. I clenched my jaw, before continuing as realisation dawns upon me.

"Come to think of it, it was him who found me."
