Brantley woke up later that night, immediatly noticing K.C wasn't beside him. He couldn't help but wonder how the hell she'd gotten up and went anywhere with how sore she still was. Getting up, he slipped his boxers back on and peeked out his door. Nothing. So, he made his way down the stairs, peeking into the living room, all he seen was the guys passed out, save Jason, who was also missing. Hearing a creak on the front porch, he peeked out the window in the living room.
He felt a pang of jealousy as he seen them sitting on the front steps, Jason's arm around her shoulder and his head resting on hers. It looked like a special moment he wanted to ruin when he noticed the pistol next to her and her shoulders shaking. A million questions began to run through his mind as his anger turned to nerves and worry. The only thing he could think of was her having suicidal thoughts. Now he didn't know what to do, it damn sure wasn't sleeping though. Sighing, he walked into the kitchen, grabbing a beer and leaning on the counter in the dark. The singer couldn't help but feel more and more helpless. Looking up, he heard the door slowly open and the pair walk back in. "Talk to him K, don't shut him out." He heard Jason whisper before she headed back up the stairs slowly. Brantley chose to stay in the kitchen for now and finish his beer, still feeling weird about everything. It was obvious she was dealing with something she possibly felt like Jason was the only one who got it. But, he may surprise the redhead with the shit he'd put himself through after she left.
"Don't doubt her man. She wants to talk, she just doesn't know how to say it to you." Brantley jumped at the sound of Jason's deep voice in the dark. "Seems she has you for that anyway." Jason sighed, hearing the jealousy dripping from the singers words. "Look, she's been through hell her whole life, I know that. I also know you and this family were the only things that kept her from killing herself a long time ago..." "Why'd she have the pistol next to her?" Brantley interrupted, shaking his head. "Not what you think, just makes her feel better to have it, ain't even loaded. She may have thoughts, but I can tell you straight up, she wont do it. Her mind is still 5,000 miles away in the shit hole we came from. She had a nightmare, didn't want to bother anyone, so she went outside. I was already out there." Brantley sighed, leaning his head down and running his hands over his short hair. "If there's anything between y'all man, I need to know. I can't keep feelin like I'm competin' with you." Jason snorted, "Trust me bro, it ain't a competition when it comes to you. You're all she wants, all she sees. I'm no different to her than Kolby is." "Maybe for her, what about you?" Brantley cocked his eyebrow, "I'm married, happily, because of her. She's saved my life more than once. Her, and those three in there asleep are all the family I've got. Sorry it bothers you man, but thats how it is." Jason turned and left Brantley in the dark kitchen with his beer. He really felt like Jason was telling the truth, he also was starting to feel like an ass for dragging everyone around with his moody shit.
Standing up, he poured the rest of the beer down the drain and quietly headed back upstairs. Pushing the door open as quietly as he could, he seen through the moonlight in the window she was laying on the side he had been on, hugging his pillow, her eyes wide open. Slowly climbing in behind her, he ran his hand up her bare leg to her stomach, wrapping his arm around and gently pulling her close to him. He smiled a bit when he felt her grab his hand and tightly lace his fingers with hers, pulling it to her chest. "I love you K.C. All of you, every bit of you." He nuzzled her neck and kissed her ear. She let go of him and rolled over slowly, snuggling into his chest as much as she could, wrapping her arm under his and over his back. Brantley could feel that old feeling all over again, all of her hurt and pain as she held onto him and fought back tears. "It's jus me baby, like old times. Let it out." Running his hand down her hair, the singer felt her shake as she started to cry. "I can't get my head back here. I feel so fucking lost. It all just keeps playing over and over." Brantley grabbed her chin gently and made her look up at him. He looked into her eyes and didn't even have to say the words, she already knew what he was thinking as she nodded her head in the moonlight.
Getting back up, he slipped on some pants and an old pair of flip flops he had before grabbing his keys and scooping her up carefully. Carrying her down the stairs and out the door as quietly as he could, he sat her on the passenger side of his truck before heading around to the drivers side. Looking over and noticing she was in a tank top and shorts, he reached in the back and handed her his Browning hoodie he'd left in there the other day. She smiled as she took it and slipped it on, letting it swallow her with warmth and Brantley's scent. He flipped his console back, "You're too far away." Gently grabbing her again, he slid her until she was up against him, glancing down and seeing her blushing smile. "Somethin as beautiful as yous gotta be kept close." He grinned when he seen her snicker a little at his cheesiness. He'd always managed to make her smile no matter how down she was.
They rode along in silence, going no where, just taking roads that went around town and wrapped around. K.C glanced at the radio, seeing it was 4:17 in the morning and she couldn't help but feel bad. "I'm sorry." She broke the comfortable silence they'd been in since they left the house. "Why? I'm ridin around with most beautiful woman ever." She smirked and rolled her eyes, "At four in the morning. I know you gotta be exaughsted." Brantley sighed. "I am. But it ain't about me. If this is what helps you, then I'll ride these roads for days, baby." He kissed her temple and watched her yawn. His mind wandered back to his and Jason's conversation in the kitchen earlier. "You know I don't know what I'd do without you, right? Friend, girlfriend, whatever. I need you." K.C raised her eyebrow, but nodded anyway, knowing then he'd seen her and Jason on the porch. "It's not loaded, never been loaded by me. It was daddy's." She sighed and ran her hand through her hair. "I just put myself in these positions to have bad shit happen to me and then I wonder how my life is a fuckin mess. It's my fault. I put Jason through hell way too much, put your brother, Jax and Mars in positions they shouldn't have to worry about being in, sometimes I feel like I'm trying to chase death and see what it's like." Brantley for once since she'd been home, finally knew how she felt. "I know that feelin. I just went about my chase a different way." He slowed down, pulling down the old road he knew so well to their spot, staying quiet until they parked and got out. Brantley watched in the moonlight as she limped over to the rock they always sat at before turning to him, making him smile a bit. "Need help?" She made a face before he kissed her nose, picking her up gently and sitting her on top before climbing up behind her.
They sat in silence, listening to the night against the river. Brantley could tell she was somewhere else entirely. He wanted nothing more than for her to talk, but he knew she wouldn't anytime soon probably. He chuckled suddenly, "You remember the first time we smoked? Snuck down here on the bikes, got too high to ride back and our mommas found out?" He felt her chuckle. "You should've seen daddy's face when I told him I got it from his stash." "I'm glad you ain't tell me that then. Man, momma tore my ass up. Daddy just laughed, now I know why." K.C leaned her head back on his shoulder, "You know, when shit gets bad, those are the times I think of. You, Ko, an me thick as thieves, daddy was still here, everyone was happy." Brantley kissed her cheek. "He never left you baby. You say shit all the time that sounds like him. You look like him, crazy like him, you gotta lovin heart like he did too. Dad says it all the time." Brantley chuckled, feeling a bit better having made her smile for a second. She grew quiet again, Brantley moving to kiss her temple. "You've gotten kinda religious, right?" The redhead spoke up, causing him to raise his eyebrow. "More so than before my wreck I guess, why?" "So, would like a ghost come before an angel?" Brantley scoffed, slightly amused and struck with wonder. "The hell are you talkin about?" She rolled her eyes. "You almost died in your wreck, right?" He nodded. "You didn't see nuthin? No one came and said anything to you?" Studying her face and seeing she was serious, he shrugged, telling her something he'd never told anyone. "I seen you. I always seen you when I got too fucked up. Guess that's why I kept doin it. You said what you always did, "quit bein so fuckin stupid." I knew there was no way you were actually there. I took it rough for a bit, then decided to do what you said. Quit bein so fuckin stupid and now look where I am." He smiled a bit when he heard her chuckle. "You seen your daddy?"He felt her nod. "It was weird. I've been worse off than this and never seen anything like that. He walked up to me, he picked me up, grabbed my face and told me "Enough is enough." Then he was gone. I don't quite know what he meant. It's bothering me." "Could mean a lotta shit. Enough fightin, settle down. Enough bein stuck in the hell you were in, enough of not livin the way you want. Maybe he wanted you to take it the way you thought was best. But, don't go chasin shit you wont find again baby, it wont work, trust me." Brantley knew more than anyone something like that could fuck you up more than you realized. For him, he'd realized before it was too late. "Sometimes I feel like it's all I've been doing this whole time." She sighed, "Baby, if you wanna be done, no ones gunna think less of you. I'm positive your daddy is beyond proud of everything you've done. It's time you did somethin for yourself." "I don't know anything else Brantley." He rolled his eyes, "Then you learn somethin else, duh. Go to school online and travel with me. Stay home, help momma out and relax. Do whatever you want. All I care about is seein you happy, an right now, I ain't seein it." He kissed her cheek and held her tight. "Part of me is scared to get out. Then what am I?" "A sexy, bad ass vet. Duh." The sound of her giggle gave Brantley butterflies. "Thanks B." "That's what I'm here for." Laying back on the rock, he pulled her with him, kissing her forehead as she yawned and snuggled into his side. He hoped she'd gotten that he understood what she was going through, and let him keep being there for her. "I love you, K." He felt her smile on his chest and ran her hand over his stomach, squeezing him lightly. "I love you more, B." He chuckled, "You wish."
