She snapped out of it after that, and we all realized the trigger was never Lucia.
It was me.
Still, she's out of it, talking normally to Gabe and Harper and Mason and everyone.
But me.
And I notice she keeps giving me weird looks.
Finally, I see her nudge Annalise.
"Who is he?" She asks.
I'm scrolling through my instagram.
"Him." Odette nods towards me.
Anna stares at her.
"You don't know who he is?"
Everyone is quiet, watching.
"Erm..." she trails off. "No. Why? Should I?"
She doesn't know who I am?
I look at her, feeling like I've been stabbed in the heart a million times over.
And over.
And over again.
"You don't remember him?" Mason asks her slowly.
She looks at him.
"No." She says. "I don't. Why? Who is he?"
"Odeletta..." Adelaide trails off.
"Maman." Odette says. "Who is he?"
"He's your fiancé." Harper says quietly.
"What?" She demands. "My fiancé? No." She shakes her head, and looks at me.
Mason sits up.
"Do you remember everyone in this room?" He asks.
"Yes." She says.
"Who am I then?" Julian asks.
"You're Gabe's cousin."
"Who is Gabe?" He presses.
"Harper's boyfriend."
"Who is Mason?"
"Gabe's friend."
"How did you meet Mason?"
"I had French with him?"
"Who did he sit with?"
"I do not know."
"Do you remember the day you reunited with us?" Josh asks his daughter carefully.
"Yes." She laughs. "I was alone before that."
"No." He shakes his head. "You had Nathan."
"Who is Nathan?"
"Your fiancé." Harper says.
"Are we seriously engaged? This is a joke."
And then she starts laughing.
"The ring on your finger is not a joke." Peyton says.
She looks down at her finger and then stops laughing.
Yeah, it's really not funny.
Her eyes stay on that ring for a long time.
It hurts to think. It hurts to move. It hurts to breathe.
Any hope I had is gone, and I know now, without her, I'm going to die alone.
I wish that guy was after me. I wish I-
No I don't. I don't want that to happen to me.
Because I don't want her to deal with what I have dealt with.
